New Urbanism and COVID-19

G. Matthew Molinsky | Thursday, April 30, 2020

As the guy who wrote about his love for New Urbanism three months ago and wanted to promote the idea of being more connected to people through close contact with them, COVID-19 makes me feel pretty silly. My first reaction to the outbreak hitting America was bleak. Everyone is going to hole up in their

Rectors can’t do their jobs while handcuffed

G. Matthew Molinsky | Thursday, April 16, 2020

When the rectors of Notre Dame residence halls are unobstructed from doing their jobs, their roles resemble that of fathers and mothers. As parents do with their children, rectors share a life with their residents and in an intimate home. They eat meals together, celebrate holidays together and pray together. However, certain policies from the

On being an American Catholic

G. Matthew Molinsky | Thursday, March 5, 2020

My early teenage years were a time when I began to take a stronger interest in my faith. It was also the time when I became more aware of the injustices in America. Interestingly, this led to my Catholic identity becoming a way to escape from my duties as an American.  Having grown up saying

Value of collecting pop tabs

G. Matthew Molinsky | Thursday, February 20, 2020

For over three years now, my friends and I have had an obsession with collecting pop tabs, those metal pieces on the tops of aluminum cans. The idea behind collecting the pop tabs is that they can be donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, an organization that helps families with sick children resident close

How I became a new urbanist and why you should too

G. Matthew Molinsky | Thursday, February 6, 2020

During a six-week stint abroad in Rome, I fell in love with the European city. I lived in a two-bedroom apartment on the second floor of a seven-story apartment building in the neighborhood of Garbatella. Every day, I made the 15-minute commute by metro to the Notre Dame Global Gateway, located a few blocks from

A civil engineer considers structural weakness

G. Matthew Molinsky | Thursday, January 23, 2020

I’ve spent a lot of time in engineering classes, learning about topics such as the chemical process of manure acting as a fertilizer, bored out of my mind, asking myself, “Is this absolutely necessary to earn my civil engineering degree?” These mind-numbing classes neither advance my professional aspirations nor satisfy my personal educational curiosities. The

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
