Scene-ior Selections

Nora McGreevy, Brian Boylen, Augie Collins, Cynthia Tran and Carlos De Loera | Wednesday, May 1, 2019

Senior year feels a lot like LCD Soundsystem’s song “All My Friends.” The beat speeds up, emotions rise, time slips away faster and faster until you can barely jump up and down quickly enough to keep time to the music. All of a sudden, you’re close to the end. As their final year winds down,

Superorganism seeks to revamp pop on debut

Augie Collins | Wednesday, March 21, 2018

Superorganism may be a fledgling band, but that isn’t stopping them from having big aspirations. In 2017, guitarist Christopher “Harry” Young lamented on the stale nature of today’s pop music, saying: “It feels like it needs a bit more fun injected.” And with the lofty goal of revamping modern day pop in mind, the eight-piece

Rostam’s “Half-Light” Review

Augie Collins | Friday, September 29, 2017

In January 2016, Rostam Batmanglij announced his departure from Vampire Weekend while the band was at the seeming peak of their popularity, after having disrupted the indie rock scene with three albums marked by global music influences. The split was an amicable one though, with Batmanglij and Ezra Koenig, the lead vocalist of Vampire Weekend,

Zola Jesus offers beautiful sorrow on new record ‘Okovi’

Augie Collins | Thursday, September 14, 2017

For Nika Roza Danilova, the musician behind Zola Jesus, “Okovi” — her latest record — was not just the next step in her career, but a necessary life event. “Okovi” came to life as Danilova found herself submerged under layers of depression and darkness. The album’s cover showcases Danilova’s depression, her face obscured by a

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard release two excellent records within few months

Augie Collins | Friday, September 1, 2017

While some of us were busy forming a symbiotic relationship with our sofas over the summer, the busiest band in the world had their hands full releasing not one, but two full-length studio albums in a two-month span. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, an eyebrow-raising seven-piece crew led by front man Stu Mackenzie, hails

Run The Jewels live in two cities

Lucas Masin-Moyer, Augie Collins and Brian Boylen | Tuesday, February 21, 2017

In 2015, Kendrick Lamar declared on “Hood Politics”: “Critics want to mention that they miss when hip-hop was rappin’ … if you did Killer Mike’d be platinum.” It is with this ringing endorsement from perhaps the most iconic contemporary rapper that Run The Jewels, the collaboration between Killer Mike and El-P, launched into the recording of

“Out of Time” Reissue Reveals a New Dimension of an Old Classic

Augie Collins | Monday, December 5, 2016

In celebration of the album’s recent 25th anniversary, R.E.M’s landmark record “Out of Time” has been reissued and expanded in style, boasting a second disc of 19 newly remixed demos. These extra tracks show the songs slowly taking shape; several drafts feature hummed or even silent sections of where lyrics had not yet been finalized.

Mick Jenkins seeks healing on debut LP

Augie Collins | Wednesday, October 12, 2016

Looking at Mick Jenkins’ “The Healing Component” from the surface, it’s easy to scoff and think of the LP as nothing more than another rapper’s take on the ever-present theme of love. Take a step back, folks. “The Healing Component” may not be revolutionary, but it does provide us with a fresh take that pumps

Devendra Banhart’s serendipitous ‘Ape in Pink Marble’

Augie Collins | Monday, September 26, 2016

Every few years Devendra Banhart pops in to offer his next charming collection. The fickle nature of his output is a defining characteristic, his tracks are not put through the grinder to come out in neatly labeled cans. Banhart’s new album “Ape in Pink Marble” is as raw as it is refined, a collection of late

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
