To scoot or not to scoot?

Jonah Tran | Tuesday, August 29, 2023

Notre Dame is a big university. Spanning 1,250 acres with about 170 buildings, our campus may at times appear as a ground for hiking rather than strolling. First-years especially know all too well the laborious, time-consuming, daily walks from North Quad to DeBartolo Hall. And so, how does one overcome the locomotion issue? Scooters. You

I don’t care about you anymore. Seriously.

Jonah Tran | Tuesday, April 25, 2023

I dream of a better Notre Dame society! I dream of a society that mandates each of its students to wear identification badges on their right breast. The IDs ought not to state one’s medical history, religion or race — those characteristics are irrelevant to the visionary purpose I have in mind. The mandate will

7 reasons why you shouldn’t come to Notre Dame

Jonah Tran | Wednesday, April 12, 2023

I would like to apologize in advance to Fr. John I. Jenkins C.S.C., the Notre Dame Board of Trustees, faculty and staff, student government, McKenna Hall, the dining hall workers and Fr. Edward F. Sorin C.S.C. for criticizing your private research university which is inspired by its Catholic character to be a powerful force for

Hey hey! Ho ho! Radio country music has got to go!

Jonah Tran | Monday, March 27, 2023

Mid Wallen’s most recent album “One Thing at a Time” shocked the country music stage with 111 minutes and 36 seconds of consummate entertainment, writing and variety. That boy from East Tennessee has proven once again that there is still plenty more subject matter concerning the unpleasant relationships with past lovers and his pleasant relationship

Dining hall despair

Jonah Tran | Monday, February 27, 2023

The dining hall food is terrible. There, I had to rip the Band-Aid off. I will not sugarcoat the quality of the dining hall food. On the whole, it is simply bad. Before I begin listing off my grievances, I need to establish a few things. My opinions are based off my experience predominately at

Happy birthday to me!

Jonah Tran | Monday, January 30, 2023

My birthday was last Saturday. It was the 19th one to date and certainly the most memorable one. I have had a complicated  past with birthdays. I have never had a birthday party. I can never seem to blow out all the candles in one quick motion. I usually do not love the cake because of

New year, same me

Jonah Tran | Wednesday, January 18, 2023

I like the idea of New Year’s resolutions. No, in fact, I love them. I think New Year’s resolutions are a fantastic, nearly foolproof way to commit yourself to new goals. They improve productivity, promote ambition and summarily eliminate procrastination. Here are my top three favorite resolutions of all time! Number 1. Go to the

The Liver King: a tale of raw meat and lies

Jonah Tran | Monday, December 5, 2022

The year is 5000 B.C. You just completed a successful three-day hunt. You speared the mastodon to death and harvested its organs. Your personal chef prepared for you a feast of grilled ribeye steaks, raw liver, testicles, and bone marrow. Before you settle into your makeshift straw bed inside the cave, you inject yourself with

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
