Never stop writing

Kathryn Marshall | Friday, May 19, 2017

Thank you, Observer, for shaping me into a storyteller. Stories capture the significance of the world around us by taking snapshots of everyday events and conversations, whether they take place in a lecture hall or at a demonstration downtown. They entertain us, they inform us and even more importantly, they challenge us. They challenge us

Just keep running

Kathryn Marshall | Tuesday, April 11, 2017

Right now, I can’t feel my legs. Or my feet for that matter. In fact, I think I am currently in Runner’s Heaven, a place where you can’t feel your legs, where the gatorade is always cold, and where the weather is approximately 63 degrees with a light breeze. If I’m in Runner’s Heaven, then

Believe in unicorns

Kathryn Marshall | Tuesday, February 21, 2017

My childhood is defined by an unyielding belief in unicorns. When my fourth-grade class decided to make an encyclopedia of our favorite animals, I found myself protesting the creation of a “Mythological Creatures” section because to my knowledge, unicorns belonged in the “Animals” section. I read every unicorn-containing book I could get my hands on.

Those before me

Kathryn Marshall | Tuesday, December 6, 2016

I still remember my first breakfast in the dining hall. I was determined to make friends in college, so I made toast and wove through a sea of completely empty tables towards the one table that actually had an occupant. As I would later learn, the student was a senior, and actually a stellar soprano

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
