Republicanism at a crossroads

Kyle Palmer | Monday, April 18, 2016

On March 30, Chris Matthews pressed Donald Trump on his abortion stance; after initially sidestepping the question, Trump stated that women should be punished if they get an abortion, assuming abortion would be illegal at that time. Now, Trump has walked that stance back, “clarified” it, and ultimately restated it, but that’s not the specific

Of nominees and applesauce

Kyle Palmer | Monday, February 22, 2016

On Feb. 13, Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was reported as having died while on vacation in Texas. Before the evening news could even report it to the nation, speculation swirled as to who would replace him. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell vowed not to confirm any nominee President Barack Obama might send him,

Hillary, you are the problem

Kyle Palmer | Monday, February 15, 2016

Hillary Clinton was supposed to be the inevitable Democratic presidential nominee this election season. In 2008, she won the New Hampshire primary by nearly 4 percent. On Tuesday, she lost New Hampshire by more than 22 percent to the 74-year-old Democratic Socialist who was supposed to be no more than a minor gadfly to her pending

The President we needed

Kyle Palmer | Monday, January 25, 2016

At his final State of the Union address, President Obama harkened back to where he started with a message of hope and change. It was refreshing, and I must admit it was a pretty good speech overall. He spoke to lawmakers and to the American people. It was a message of unity and civic engagement.

Thanks, Jake

Events such as Wednesday’s should give everyone a reason to pray. Pray for Jake Scanlan. Pray for his parents. Pray for loved ones who mourn for him. Pray for guidance for ourselves. I didn’t know Jake Scanlan. Many of us didn’t. I wish I could speak to Jake’s life, to recount a funny story of

Break the glass

Kyle Palmer | Thursday, October 29, 2015

After Wednesday’s GOP presidential primary debate, I wrote my regular Friday column with a predictable analysis of the debate. By yesterday morning, it was polished and ready to send off (The Observer asks I submit my columns by 5 p.m. the day before publishing). However, something else happened that made me scrap the entire column and start

Surprise, America: The Pope is still Catholic

Kyle Palmer | Thursday, October 15, 2015

I remember receiving a number of news notifications on my phone back in the summer of 2013, and the consensus among media seemed to suggest that Pope Francis had uprooted the Catholic Church altogether. Now, in reality, he said in response to a question about homosexuality, “Who am I to judge?” Contrary to what pundits

Hoping for GOP dropouts

Kyle Palmer | Friday, September 25, 2015

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker did something Monday evening that is increasingly uncommon in today’s political environment: He realized when he lost, and accepted it. His campaign was in debt, with little chance of recovering in the coming months, and unlike another unnamed GOP candidate, self-funding really wasn’t an option for Walker. He spoke for less

Biden is Democrats’ best option

Kyle Palmer | Friday, September 11, 2015

Joseph R. Biden, Jr. has served as vice president of the United States for two terms. The Vice President’s primary duty is to be ready to replace the President if he is ever incapacitated. His election to serve at Barack Obama’s side means that his party and his country believe he is qualified to take

Ready for Hillary?

Kyle Palmer | Thursday, April 16, 2015

Hillary Clinton is the most qualified candidate for President of the United States since George H.W. Bush. Her résumé, which includes her tenure as First Lady of Arkansas and the United States, senator from New York and Secretary of State, eclipses any declared or potential candidates by far. The problem is that voters don’t seem to care

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
