Be brave enough to care

Mary Szromba | Wednesday, April 29, 2020

I care about a lot of things. Probably too many things. I have strong opinions from politics to whether the Oxford comma ought to be respected as a punctuation mark (it should). At the beginning of this year, I decided to take all these opinions and write them down, so I became a columnist for

Essential workers have always deserved better

Mary Szromba | Wednesday, April 1, 2020

I’ll admit, it’s been a real pain to transition to online classes and to keep up with ever-changing deadlines. I recently returned to my apartment in South Bend in an attempt to boost my productivity, but I’m not sure it’s had any effect. My parents are also working from home where they have to consistently

A nation of entitlement

Mary Szromba | Wednesday, February 26, 2020

“We’re an entitlement nation. We were born that way. We’re a country that came to another country with people on it and went, ‘Yeah I think we’ll have that. Yeah that’ll be nice.’” In 2012, Jon Stewart said the above quote during a debate with Bill O’Reilly. He was making a joke, but the statement

The era of stupidity

Mary Szromba | Wednesday, February 12, 2020

Watching Donald Trump stumble his way through his presidency has been a fascinating and depressing experience. How has a man who lacks intelligence, experience and political instincts managed not to destroy his own presidency yet? It seems like he is incapable of stringing a coherent sentence together when it isn’t scripted. How was he still

Not Catholic, need not apply

Jackie O'Brien and Mary Szromba | Thursday, January 30, 2020

Fellow columnist Brennan Buhr’s piece published Monday, “The twilight zone,” is a sorry misunderstanding of what it means to be a Catholic university. While Mr. Buhr is relatively accurate in describing the position of the Catholic Church with respect to abortion, he goes 10 steps too far in declaring that all students running for student

Religious schools: save yourselves

Jackie O'Brien and Mary Szromba | Wednesday, January 29, 2020

This past week, fellow columnist Vincent Mallet advocated for the right of private, religious schools to receive equal access to publicly funded scholarship programs. In concluding his discussion of this challenging constitutional issue, Mallet states, “the Supreme Court should affirm that religious schools cannot be legally discriminated against on the basis of their religious character.”

You can’t just drone strike the bad guys

Mary Szromba | Wednesday, January 15, 2020

One of President Trump’s major campaign promises was an end to prolonged conflicts in the Middle East. “I’m the guy that didn’t want to go to war,” he said in 2016, and his anti-deployment stance likely won him the votes of those living in counties with high military casualty rates. For a while the president

Prepare to vote for the ham sandwich

Mary Szromba | Wednesday, December 4, 2019

“If it is between Donald Trump and a ham sandwich, I will vote for a ham sandwich — and so will the rest of America.” Over the course of this holiday weekend I have had to listen to this phrase from my father no less than 20 times. He first proclaimed it when he found

In memoriam: The victims of progress

Mary Szromba | Wednesday, November 13, 2019

In last week’s column “What is Religion?,” what seemed like a thoughtful, intelligent exploration of what it means to be religious, how modern Catholics fit into society and what increasing secularization means for Christians today, ended up being a list of ways religious Americans have been victimized and persecuted by the left. I believe it

Lindsey Graham: blink twice if you need help

Mary Szromba | Wednesday, October 30, 2019

I must admit I am completely dumbfounded by Lindsey Graham. When I decided to write about him this week, I was hoping I’d be able to come up with some sort of argument about his politics or his recent behavior, but I am at a loss. Instead, I am only left with questions: What happened

Joseph R. Biden has become the second Catholic President in United States history, but his position on abortion is “one that cannot be condoned” according to Rev. Robert Dowd.

“Other bishops think that, because he’s a conscientious Catholic whose faith is obviously important to him, we should strike a more positive tone, particularly at the outset of his presidency. After all, in many ways Biden’s positions are more in line with Catholic teaching than Trump’s, particularly when it comes to migrants, refugees, climate issues, poverty and inequality,” Dowd continued.
