Tragedy in the Facebook age

Michael Fliotsos | Monday, December 7, 2015

In a situation that is depressingly familiar as of late, my latest discovery of the mass shooting in San Bernardino occurred through the “Trending” tab on Facebook. One click on the “#SanBernardino” link at the top of the list brought me to a feed that was distressing on many different levels. The first — and

Never far from home

Another post-fall break Notre Dame homecoming, another stream of “how was your fall break?” inquiries. Oddly enough, my response to this question seems to change each time I share it. After scheduling a few interviews over break to minimize my time away from school and to maximize my time to actually explore the cities I was visiting, I

As fish in the pond

One of the most relevant lessons I learned about animal biology over my years in college did not, oddly enough, come from a biology class as a science major at the University of Notre Dame. Rather, this learning moment was delivered by one of the 10-year-old little buddies I met through College Mentors for Kids

The sigh

Double-fisted triple-shot espresso Starbucks runs from LaFun, vacancies at the Bookstore basketball courts despite picture-perfect weather, crowded section study lounges … ah yes, the first round of exams and paper deadlines must be right around the corner. From the three-papers-due-on-Wednesday dilemma to the psychology, statistics and orgo trio of testing terror, it is difficult to

In the moments of silence

Michael Fliotsos | Monday, September 7, 2015

As an RA in Duncan Hall this year, I didn’t expect my fourth residence hall move-in experience to be especially educational. After all, there’s only so much to know about unpacking cars, moving furniture and awkward first interactions between randomly assigned roommates from across the country. As the freshmen moved in for Welcome Weekend two

Just freshman things

Michael Fliotsos | Tuesday, August 25, 2015

Another summer has come and gone, meaning those of us returning to campus will experience once again the drawstring-bag toting, loaded-cargo-shorts wearing, staring-at-the-Notre-Dame-mobile-app-map freshmen. Before you ask, no, this is not going to be a ‘freshmen are the most annoying thing ever’ column. Trust me, I would not have accepted an RA position if these things actually

Michael and the whale

Michael Fliotsos | Sunday, November 16, 2014

Bearing two exams and a paper, last week wasn’t the most gentle of welcomes back to Notre Dame after a relaxing and blissfully unproductive fall break. As I am confident we all know by now, being subjugated to the crucible of academic stressors often brings out some interesting reactions and coping mechanisms in a person,

‘So Notre Dame:’ translations of ND cliches

Michael Fliotsos | Monday, September 29, 2014

Now that we’ve been at school for a month, we’ve once again gotten used to (or introduced to, for freshmen readers) being around Notre Dame students 24/7. One important part of this unique culture, as with any, is the common language used to communicate ideas. And just like any language, sometimes there’s a hidden meaning

My Friday morning

Michael Fliotsos | Tuesday, September 23, 2014

At 5:30 a.m., the alarm went off, piercing through the silence of the early morning. I sat up almost immediately — after all, I hadn’t slept much the night before. I was gripped by an unsettling combination of nerves and excitement for the events ahead, tossing and turning in my sleep (or lack thereof). Taking

From doing to dreaming

For my column this week, let’s start off with a little experiment inspired by a recent guest speaker in my management class. Grab a pen or pencil from your backpack (or whatever someone left behind at your table at the DH today) and draw an L-shaped coordinate plane. With your pen, draw one dot at

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
