Becoming my own man

Miko Malabute | Friday, May 13, 2016

I’m obviously not exactly a stud athlete, but I have a bit of a confession to make — when I play pick-up basketball, I’m not exactly the most confident player on the court. Even when I’m playing well, I don’t always start off with oozing amounts of swagger and belief that I’m going to make

Setting the second screen

Miko Malabute | Wednesday, March 30, 2016

Let’s establish something right now: At the risk of truly sounding “too millennial,” social media is a way of life. Early last week, the sports world went up in flames as people expressed their frustrations and confusions: not because of the height of March Madness, not because of the absolutely outrageous material coming out of the

Netflix released “The Characters” on March 11, an eight-episode series that allowed comedians 30 minutes of creative free reign on Netflix’s budget and platform. Netflix has sponsored stand-up specials before, but the sketch-based project sees the platform investing in comedy at an even more involved level. To garner some hype for our favorite comedians, Scene

Hold the reviews

Miko Malabute | Monday, February 29, 2016

I find music and movie reviews are so absolutely pointless. There, I said it. And no, before you start drawing conclusions, I am not referring to any particular writer or any particular entity. Furthermore, I fully understand there is a place for these types of articles in our society. But keep all of those reviews

Weekly Watch: ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’

Miko Malabute | Monday, February 22, 2016

Maybe it’s the senioritis (although if any of my professors read this, I promise I’m immune to senioritis — if I’m absent from class, I really am terribly ill); maybe it’s the allure of spring break quickly approaching, and the prospect of sunshine and stress-free days not too far ahead; maybe it’s simply the fantasy of

A millennial’s take on “American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson”

Miko Malabute | Thursday, February 18, 2016

No pun intended — it’s an absolute crime the “American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson” television series has not garnered the same amount of popularity and attention as its predecessors in the crime drama genre. The latest season in the “American Crime Story” television series covers what has been widely known as one

hYpE Week: Wavy guest features

Miko Malabute, Adam Ramos, Erin McAuliffe, Jack Riedy and Matt McMahon | Monday, February 8, 2016

The “Waves” tracklist by Kanye West has proved a largely illegible work-in-progress, but when we squinted really hard and tilted our phone screens just right, we were able to make out some of the signatures. Here are our hopes on how the signees will — or, in some cases, prayers that they won’t — contribute

Best singles of 2016… so far

Erin McAuliffe, Jimmy Kemper, John Darr, Adam Ramos and Miko Malabute | Wednesday, January 27, 2016

Erin McAuliffe: Daughter — “Alone / With You” Daughter’s Elena Trona utters the words “I hate” before a worried rush of synths floods on “Alone / With You,” a track off the band’s Jan. 15 release “Not To Disappear.” The bass pulsates — a loudening, panicked heartbeat pacing alongside as Trona carries on in a rant

Making a tech addict

Miko Malabute | Wednesday, January 13, 2016

Over my last semester break as an undergraduate, I joined what seemed to be the rest of the millennial generation in binge-watching the newest, hottest Netflix series, “Making a Murderer,” a 10-part documentary series chronicling the mysterious, confusing murder case surrounding Steven Avery, his nephew Brendan Dassey and the tragic victim Teresa Halbach. For those

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
