What’s in a fear?

Maggie Klaers | Monday, February 6, 2023

On any given day, I walk into one of the big DeBartolo Hall (DeBart) classrooms for a lecture and my mind is briefly consumed with fear that I will accidentally tumble down the stairs in front of everyone in a series of flailing somersaults. With how clumsy I am, it feels like an eventual inevitability.

To the women who make Notre Dame my home

Maggie Klaers | Wednesday, September 7, 2022

When you hand a little kid a piece of paper and a crayon and tell them to draw “home,” it’s pretty likely that they will draw a triangle stacked on top of a square. Maybe they will add a chimney, a door, a tree and some windows.  As we grow up, a lot of our

Garth Brooks: One sweet cat

Maggie Klaers | Sunday, May 8, 2022

Music holds the power to take us out of our time and place and make us feel something. The best music, in my opinion, feels like home. Our favorite songs become a place we can escape to or turn to remind us of a memory or place in our life. Musicians have a special talent

Write more notes

Maggie Klaers | Wednesday, April 6, 2022

Even the smallest of actions can brighten someone’s day or even change their life.  During this time of the semester, while we all get swept up in our overflowing Google calendars, pack our weekends full of future memories and just try to get through the day on three hours of sleep, it becomes so easy

You already know what’s up — Scene Selections (Taylor’s Version) are below. “State of Grace (Taylor’s Version)” By Abby Patrick, Viewpoint Editor  First impressions are hard. I’ve made enough questionable ones to know. I don’t know what Taylor Swift put in “State of Grace,” but I think she had me at those drums. Or the

Some spooky season shenanigans

Maggie Klaers | Monday, November 1, 2021

Last year, I could not believe how big of a deal Halloween was in college, but there was something so fun about watching a bunch of 20ish year olds running around playing make-believe for the night.  Growing up, I had a closet of costumes in my basement with a bin full of different identities I

Tall enough to see into the mixing bowl

Maggie Klaers | Wednesday, October 13, 2021

I remember being too short to peek into the mixing bowl when I’d be sitting on the counter as a kid. I would stand on my tippy-toes to steal loose chocolate chips and brown sugar scattered on the counter. My mom would pick me up so I could grab a fingerful of cookie dough and

My evening with Matthew Morrison

Maggie Klaers | Wednesday, September 29, 2021

“An Evening with Matthew Morrison.” That’s all I knew, and it was enough to get me to the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center (DPAC) last Friday night. If you aren’t familiar with Matthew Morrison, he’s a Broadway star, turned Glee teacher, turned cyber-bullying victim. I only knew him from his star role as Mr. Scheuster on

Scene Selections: May flowers

Aidan O'Malley, Evan McKenna, Maggie Klaers, Alysa Guffey and John Clark | Wednesday, May 5, 2021

A few weeks ago, Scene was feeling blue. And can you blame us? As we trudged our way through the middle of the semester, our already-low spirits were lowered only still by “permacloud,” rain storms and chilly temperatures. Throw in some seasonal allergies, and you’ve got yourself the month of April. So we did what

Blue Powerade + Diet Coke: The ultimate mocktail

Maggie Klaers | Friday, April 16, 2021

One nine-hour drive, two cars, two walkie talkies, two brothers, two cousins and me. When I was a kid, my family would visit Notre Dame all the time, but for one road trip, the five of us giggled in our separate cars as we said “over?” “copy, over” at the end of every sentence until

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.

A glance at the ballot suggests that this year’s candidates all appear to be human and pro-democracy. This observation may seem obvious or nonsensical, but a look back at the history of SBP elections shows that pro-democracy ideals or even personhood are not characteristic of all candidates.
