The people, not the place

Marek Mazurek | Friday, May 18, 2018

So often end-of-the-year columns talk about what a special place Notre Dame is. But it’s not. It’s a beautiful place for sure, but there are lots of beautiful campuses in the country. As an institution Notre Dame isn’t special either. It’s great academically and I will be extremely proud to receive my degree, but there

Fr. Jenkins, Mike Brey address NCAA commission’s findings

Marek Mazurek | Thursday, April 26, 2018

The Commission for College Basketball announced its recommendations to the NCAA on Wednesday, which include certifying agents for college athletes and eliminating the “one-and-done” rule for high school players looking to turn professional. The Commission was created last October in response to reports of scandals in the collegiate game involving prominent shoe companies paying high

Mazurek: The NFL Draft according to esports compatibility

Marek Mazurek | Thursday, April 26, 2018

My almost four years of writing Sports Authority columns is coming to an end. I’ve had some good ones, but a lot of bad ones. Don’t worry, people let me know when I wrote a bad one. So for my final column, I wanted to be original. But then I remembered that my only original

Irish lose to Wildcats 8-3 in final matchup of nine-game homestand

Marek Mazurek | Thursday, April 19, 2018

Notre Dame squeaked by in a game Wednesday evening against Northwestern despite inclement weather, but the Irish were unable to squeak out a win. After Tuesday night’s game against Western Michigan was cancelled due to inclement weather, it looked like Wednesday’s game was in danger of being postponed as well. And a 25-minute delay did

Mazurek: Be cognizant of athletes’ faults

Marek Mazurek | Wednesday, April 18, 2018

Just over one week later and most people I talk to still think The Masters ended with a whimper, not a bang. Patrick Reed winning was boring. No one knows who he is. I wish Jordan Spieth or Rory McIlroy had won. So on and so forth. Some of you may be able to guess

Irish drop two in weekend series with Tar Heels

Marek Mazurek | Tuesday, March 27, 2018

With the bases loaded and nobody out, Notre Dame looked poised to take an early lead in the rubber match of its series against North Carolina. Junior left fielder Ali Wester singled, freshman center fielder Abby Sweet was hit by a pitch and senior shortstop Morgan Reed reached on a bunt single. But the Irish

Mazurek: Chill it with Sister Jean

Marek Mazurek | Monday, March 26, 2018

My email address is [email protected] It’s listed at the bottom of this story, but I figured I’d put it at the beginning of the article to make it easier for you should you want to send me hate mail. Why? Because I’m about to say something bad about Sister Jean. Well, not Sister Jean herself

Irish upset by Wolverines in midweek matchup

Marek Mazurek | Thursday, March 22, 2018

Last year when Michigan and Notre Dame met at Arlotta Stadium, the Irish coasted to a 16-5 win. This year, the game was about as close as could be. Down 8-6 entering the fourth quarter, the fourth-ranked Irish (4-2, 1-0 ACC) fought tooth and nail with the Wolverines (6-2, 0-0 Big Ten) to tie the

Brian Kelly discusses defense, skill positions after first post-break practice

Marek Mazurek | Wednesday, March 21, 2018

The spring season marches on. Notre Dame held its first practice coming back from spring break, and Irish head coach Brian Kelly said his veteran group looks “clean” in the first few practices. “You see it in [senior quarterback Brandon] Wimbush and [senior wide receiver] Miles [Boykin] — they’re going to connect on some big

Mazurek: Despite tough season, Irish should hold their heads high

Marek Mazurek | Tuesday, March 20, 2018

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story was published online March 17. It wasn’t supposed to end this way for Notre Dame. Not in the NIT. Not with senior forward Bonzie Colson on the bench with yet another injury to his left foot. And it certainly wasn’t supposed to end on St. Patrick’s Day

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
