The fall of Saul: A Jimmy McGill character study

Meg Sluzas | Friday, August 26, 2022

Summer 2022 began and ended with “Better Call Saul.” The final season sucked me in with character development that only Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould can deliver. The series takes Saul Goodman, a character who mainly serves as comic relief in “Breaking Bad,” and deepens him into a man who masks his true nature to

The masters (of fine arts): Graduate thesis exhibit reviewed

Meg Sluzas | Thursday, April 21, 2022

Notre Dame has a lot of best kept secrets and the Snite has often been listed as one of them. This spring, four Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) students displayed their art theses among the other collections of art in the Snite. The exhibit covered all aesthetics, from dainty mushrooms and flowers fashioned from porcelain,

In memoriam: Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins

Meg Sluzas | Wednesday, March 30, 2022

Last Saturday morning, when I opened my Instagram and started routinely exploring my feed, I abruptly stopped scrolling. My brain registered “Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins dies at 50.” Immediately, I checked Rolling Stone and the Foo Fighters Instagram to confirm that the information I read was not fake news. Both pages had posted tributes

‘Don’t Look Up’: Unlike the comet, it missed the mark

Meg Sluzas | Wednesday, January 12, 2022

Slightly-above-average Joe: South Bend’s new Trader Joe’s

Meg Sluzas | Monday, September 20, 2021

I’ll be the first to admit that, despite being on the campus dining plan, I am a specialty grocery store junkie. Typically, when I would feel homesick here, all I had to do for a taste of snacks from home was take a car ride with my roommate to the local Fresh Thyme or Whole

‘Donda’: Just ‘Ok Ok’

Meg Sluzas | Friday, September 3, 2021

“Donda,” “Donda,” “Donda.” For the latter half of the summer the title of Kanye West’s latest album has found its way onto my social media feeds, whether it be trending tweets or Instagram photos of West’s room in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Kanye, or “Ye,” as he would prefer to be called, commanded attention and mystified his

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
