‘Russian Doll’ is a densely layered and deeply human masterpiece

Nicholas Ottone | Tuesday, February 12, 2019

Nadia (played by series creator Natasha Lyonne) stares into a bathroom mirror. It’s her 36th birthday party outside, and someone is pounding on the door. She stares confused at the door, which is decked out with strangely luminescent art. Her confusion is understandable, considering she was just hit by a car. And she died. I hesitate

Scene’s Year in Review 2018: Film

Nicholas Ottone, Dessi Gomez, Mariah Rush, Matthew Munhall and Jake Winningham | Wednesday, December 5, 2018

After yesterday’s look at television and Monday’s honorable mentions, Scene turns its focus to the best of the big screen. It was an exciting year for unexpected, new and fresh movies, as well as more than a few very welcome throwbacks. Some films brought us some summertime-campiness from ABBA and Cher, while others showcased the

Scene’s Year in Review 2018: Television

Jake Winningham, Nicholas Ottone, Martin Kennedy and Matthew Munhall | Tuesday, December 4, 2018

Today, Scene continues to chug along its end-of-year lists by looking at 2018’s best of the small screen. Some shows brought us to tears of laughter while forcing us to reexamine the importance of social media. Other shows told stories of segments of society, such as the extended LGBTQ+ community and communities of color, that

Hasan Minhaj spotlights different issues in ‘Patriot Act’

Nicholas Ottone | Tuesday, November 13, 2018

Fresh off winning a Peabody, Hasan Minhaj is riding high. After a stint as a correspondent on modern comedy’s favorite incubator, “The Daily Show,” Minhaj has landed his very own talk show. “Patriot Act” is fast and furious — a cross between “Last Week Tonight” and Minhaj’s stand-up, a condensed “Big Short” with a slick

‘Hesburgh’ is a new Notre Dame classic

Nicholas Ottone | Friday, November 9, 2018

An iconic photo, two great men, arms crossed and hands linked in a powerful display of faith and courage for civil rights. This is how many students first encounter the legendary mythic figure of University President Emeritus Fr. Theodore Hesburgh, who was president of the University of Notre Dame for 35 years. But separating man

See South Bend

Nicholas Ottone | Thursday, November 8, 2018

Since I started attending Notre Dame, I haven’t left South Bend for longer than five weeks at a time. I spent my first summer volunteering at the Center for the Homeless and my second interning for an educational non-profit in Elkhart. After so long spent in the community, I feel premature pangs of homesickness while

‘The Good Place’ gets brought down to Earth

Nicholas Ottone | Tuesday, October 30, 2018

“The real question,” Michael (Ted Danson) says to Eleanor (Kristen Bell) in “The Good Place’s” second season finale, “is what we owe to each other.” This reference to T.M. Scanlon’s work of contractual philosophy neatly summarizes the central ethos of Michael Schur’s delightfully loopy yet appreciably profound show. Yet, the third season of the NBC

‘Big Mouth’ succeeds in a sweet, shameful second season

Nicholas Ottone | Tuesday, October 23, 2018

At first glance, “Big Mouth” seems like a sex comedy merely centered on the disgusting trials of puberty. But then, the late Charles Bradley’s “Changes” plays over images of the series’ cartoon heroes as they biologically shift from childhood to awkward adolescence. Melancholy and sensitive, “Changes” and the accompanying title sequence capture the winning spirit

In ‘Sorry to Bother You,’ laughter is revolutionary

Nicholas Ottone | Wednesday, October 10, 2018

As a Marxist philosopher who fled Nazi Germany, Theodor Adorno was understandably a rather dour guy. He declared films as “neither guides for a blissful life, nor a new art of moral responsibility, but rather exhortations to toe the line, behind which stand the most powerful interests,” and he reserved specific disregard for contemporary comedian

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
