The most glaring threat to Notre Dame

Oluwatoni Akintola | Wednesday, May 17, 2023

Imagine God Quad during an ideal spring afternoon on campus. The sun beams boldly onto the University of Notre Dame and her iconic Golden Dome glows resplendently. But what if we’ve been blinded by its glare? What if, for all the resources and prestige brought to the University by another successful ND Day and a

The separation of the sexes

Oluwatoni Akintola | Tuesday, April 18, 2023

On the first floor of O’Shaughnessy Hall, the men’s and women’s bathrooms are on opposite ends of the hallway. I vividly remember the first time that I noticed this. I was a first-semester first-year, unfamiliar with the building. I remember leaving class to go to the bathroom and then seeing the women’s bathroom nearby. “The

The tightrope of white guilt and performative activism

Oluwatoni Akintola | Friday, April 14, 2023

In 2020, our country experienced a racial reckoning, the likes of which hadn’t been seen since the killings of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown in the early 2010s. But interestingly, what set the racial climate of 2020 apart from any other in recent history was the seemingly historical level of support that movements like BLM

A brave new world

Oluwatoni Akintola | Monday, March 27, 2023

Stop complaining about the Starship robots. Seriously.  First of all, they’re unimaginably polite. They yield the right of way to people and even squirrels, which makes them more considerate than 99% of electric scooter riders on campus. But secondly (and more importantly), their presence on campus is valuable because they serve as the harbingers of

The productivity fallacy

Oluwatoni Akintola | Monday, March 6, 2023

I have a killer headache right now. OK, maybe not right now, but I did for essentially the entirety of last week. I’ve had coffee less than 10 times in my life, but over the last two weeks, a new tradition of mine is a 7:30 Starbucks run before my 8 a.m. Honestly, I don’t

“I hate to say it, but if you weren’t Black, you probably wouldn’t have gotten into those schools.” Someone at my high school said that to me a few weeks after I got all of my regular decision results back. A Black friend of mine at Yale also had a similar experience during this time.

Your silence thunders

Tyre Nichols was 29. On January 7, five police officers literally beat the life out of him. One of the most trending Google searches recently is: “Tyre Nichols criminal record.” I can tell you that that search leads nowhere. I can tell you that Nichols was a law-abiding citizen and a pillar of his family.

The truth about Andrew Tate

Oluwatoni Akintola | Tuesday, January 24, 2023

Top G. Cobra. The Professor. The man born as Emory Andrew Tate has many names and many cars. And many supporters, too. In fact, Tate has become something of a messiah to one of the most misunderstood demographics of people in the world, many of whom are angry at the world for one reason or

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
