Thoughts on sledding and life

Stephen Hannon | Monday, April 12, 2021

It’s that time of year again, when the graduating Observer seniors write columns looking back on their past for years. But as a graduating Observer senior in These Unprecedented Times, I’m going to use my last column to write about COVID-19, on-campus abortion housing and the leggings vaccine. Just kidding. Buckle up and indulge me,

Gratitude when things aren’t great

Stephen Hannon | Tuesday, October 6, 2020

The pandemic has changed just about every aspect of life at Notre Dame, and it’s easy to get caught up in thinking about how many things are worse now. We can’t visit friends in other dorms, and until recently, we couldn’t even go in the rooms of friends inside our dorms. Online classes make it

South Dining Hall is better than North

Stephen Hannon | Monday, November 25, 2019

The Viewpoint section has seen a number of controversial opinion pieces recently, from parietals to leggings, from porn filters to homophobia, all dealing with serious issues. But none of these, I believe, are as polarizing as this column will be: South Dining Hall is better than North Dining Hall. First of all, South is just

Brian Kelly discusses strategy heading into Virginia Tech matchup

Stephen Hannon | Friday, November 1, 2019

Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly sat down Friday for the weekly “Brian Kelly Radio Show” after a wet practice, similar to the weather during last Saturday’s loss at Michigan. He discussed the lessons the game taught and how they can be applied to this Saturday’s home matchup against Virginia Tech. “It’s hard. It’s

The road not taken

Stephen Hannon | Tuesday, March 26, 2019

I’ve come to realize that I spend a fairly significant fraction of my waking hours walking — to and from class, the dining hall, the library, etc. I have also realized that it’s easy to fall into a rut when treading the familiar path between my dorm and those buildings. I have quickly figured out

The beauty of language differences

Stephen Hannon | Thursday, October 25, 2018

For me, one of the most interesting parts about coming to college and making new friends from across the country and around the world is the differences in dialect. I may tease my friend about his “Lwoong Island” accent, but I actually find the uniqueness of speech to be fascinating. Thanks to seemingly minor factors

How to make the internet a better place

Stephen Hannon | Wednesday, February 14, 2018

For as long as I’ve had to do school projects requiring some amount of research — since maybe third grade or so — there’s been one word that seems to strike as much fear into my teachers’ hearts as a four-letter curse word. It’s the “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named” of academia: Wikipedia. But Wikipedia is not something to

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
