We all have our go-to song. My girlfriend’s is “Island in the Sun” by Weezer. My mom’s is “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa. My friend Ian’s is “Mr. Blue Sky” by Electric Light Orchestra. My friend Blake’s is “Everybody” by Logic. These are songs that can turn our frowns upside down on any given

Get outside

Thomas Diehl | Tuesday, April 21, 2020

As an avid runner, nothing makes me happier than seeing so many people outside running. It seems like every day I see more and more people taking this quarantine as an opportunity to get outside and run. To me, running is one of the best exercises out there. Did you know Joe Biden is facing sexual assault allegations? Maybe you did, because you are on Twitter a lot and noticed the recent #TimesUpBiden trend. Most of you, though, were probably unaware because no mainstream news sources have chosen to follow up on the story. Better yet, Joe Biden has yet to even address

Think before you tweet

Thomas Diehl | Tuesday, February 4, 2020

Sitting at home on my couch, watching the Notre Dame basketball game against Indiana, I could not help but continually yell at the television. Things like, “Juwan, why would you do that?!” and, “Hubb is a turnover machine,” flew out of my mouth at a constant rate. Was there extra pressure for Notre Dame to

What’s the deal with bikes in the trees?

Thomas Diehl | Tuesday, January 21, 2020

When I visited Notre Dame during the summer of my junior year of high school, it was nothing short of memorable. The tulips around the Basilica’s Jesus Statue had fully bloomed as the Golden Dome radiated sunlight on this 60 degree day. The grass was perfectly cut in a pattern without a blade out of

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
