Four years and one lifetime ago

Tim Scanlan | Wednesday, April 22, 2015

With only two weeks left until graduation, my procrastination level has hit an all-time high. I’ve cooked, cleaned, called my parents and high school friends and even started this column before the day it was due. Big stuff. I stumbled across a gem the other day though, and I haven’t been able to shake it

That was then and this is now

Tim Scanlan | Wednesday, April 8, 2015

A large Republican presidential field is shaping up with candidates from all corners of the political right vying for the chance to face off against the established Democratic candidate. Ah, 2012! At first glance, there are many similarities between the presidential race four years ago and the one shaping up now. Republicans will field a

Money madness

Tim Scanlan | Wednesday, March 25, 2015

Brackets! Basketball! Sports! The NCAA basketball playoffs are in full swing right now, and the first weekend has surely contributed to the moniker of Madness. Fan bases from Spokane, Washington, to South Bend, Indiana, have something to cheer for as teams large and small deliver both elation and agony in equal portions. The excitement of

Corruption in sports: here and abroad

Tim Scanlan | Wednesday, February 25, 2015

Scandals and alleged corruption in the U.S. sports entertainment industry have been widely discussed over the last few years. Whether it’s ESPN pulling a report on concussions in the NFL, the steroid era that left baseball with a black eye and asterisks in the record books or NBA conspiracy theories ranging from blocked trades in

God save the Television

Tim Scanlan | Wednesday, February 11, 2015

This is a love letter to good television. It is also partially my rationalization for the amount of “Friends” my friends and I have watched in the last four weeks, but mostly it’s a love letter to good television. More specifically, I think we sometimes overlook the television we consume as mere distraction and forget that

Politics across the Atlantics

Tim Scanlan | Tuesday, January 27, 2015

Greece, like many European countries, is governed by a multiparty system revolving around the parliament. European elections can rival the Electoral College in complexity, but are often more frequent and result in greater swings in control than their American counterparts. This was evident when Syriza, a self-described radical left-wing party, took control of the Greek

Welcome to election season

Tim Scanlan | Wednesday, January 14, 2015

Freshmen, welcome to Notre Dame’s Student Government election season, where the policies are made up and the votes don’t matter. Now that’s not true, but it definitely got a few people on the second floor of LaFortune very upset for a moment there. For those of you who don’t know what’s coming, campus-wide student government

Mind the gap

Tim Scanlan | Tuesday, November 18, 2014

Since the mid 1970s there has been a widening gap in American society. This gap is the disparity between the growth in wages and the growth in productivity in the United States. The divergence occurred after a sustained period when the two statistics tracked each other in the decades following WWII. As productivity has increased,

The laws of dead men

Tim Scanlan | Tuesday, November 4, 2014

Happy Election Day! I have the honor and privilege of writing on this much-hyped and important day in American politics. When I realized what day this column would run, I struggled with what exactly I should say. Do I have a unique enough opinion to sway you about which political candidate you may support? Probably

The poor need more

Tim Scanlan | Tuesday, October 7, 2014

South central Elkhart is a diverse neighborhood just south of the downtown business district. Violent crime is fairly common, and police lights and sirens can be expected almost any night of the week. Transitions between the south side of Chicago and Elkhart are typical, and many of the poor in the area have family staying

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
