‘Beef’: Netflix says ‘know thy enemy’

Claire Lyons | Friday, April 28, 2023

In a world of 8 billion people, what are the chances of meeting your mortal enemy? Unfortunately for the main characters of “Beef,” Amy Lau (Ali Wong) and Danny Cho (Steven Yeun), they’ve already found out. At first, it seems like Amy and Danny have nothing in common except for their mutual blood-boiling hatred for one

‘The Northman’ is the best revenge film in years

Justin George | Monday, April 25, 2022

In his latest film “The Northman,” Robert Eggers takes us back to the Viking Age as we follow a young Viking prince on his quest to reclaim his kingdom, kill his murderous uncle, avenge his father’s death and save his mother. If this sounds at all familiar, that’s because it’s basically “Hamlet” (well, actually it’s

Scene at Chi Film Fest: ‘C’mon C’mon,’ ‘The Worst Person in the World’

Aidan O'Malley | Wednesday, October 20, 2021

Another day, another 1,000 words or so about the Chicago International Film Festival. Before I dive into the films themselves, I want to acknowledge just how special these moviegoing experiences were for me. I saw “The Worst Person in the World,” for example, at a press-only screening. I felt like a real Roger Ebert —

‘Minari’: Asian-American dreams in technicolor

Angela Mathew | Monday, March 15, 2021

“Minari,” produced by A24, is the story of the Korean-American Yi family who moved to rural Arkansas in the ‘80s in pursuit of their American dream. The film’s plot moves slowly but makes use of stunning cinematography to tell an evocative but often neglected American story.  “Minari,” like other immigrant stories, details how difficult life

‘Midsommar’ and the phantom genre of elevated horror

Jacob Neisewander | Tuesday, September 10, 2019

If you asked a film buff to explain the meaning of the term “elevated horror,” they would probably start off by listing a smattering of critically acclaimed horror films from the last decade. Movies like “The Babadook” and “It Follows” are elevated horror. “Get Out” and “Us” are certainly elevated horror. What about the “The

‘The Last Black Man in San Francisco’ stuns visually and emotionally

Colleen Fischer | Tuesday, August 27, 2019

Many film critics like to tie movies into little bows near the beginning of their articles, summarizing them with their own premise of the message. Doing this for “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” is not only difficult, but it does the film a great disservice. I read a few reviews to ensure what

‘Eighth Grade’ profoundly comforting, heartbreaking

Nora McGreevy | Monday, September 3, 2018

Eighth grade is the worst. Take the birthday pool party, for instance. For the introverted, self-conscious kid with anxiety, a pool party is a minefield of potential trauma. Social interaction without the comfortable confines of the classroom, gift-giving, navigating conversations with your cliquey peers — and all in swimsuits, no less. “Eighth Grade,” directed by Bo

Schrader delivers again with ‘First Reformed’

Charlie Kenney | Thursday, August 23, 2018

Reverend Ernst Toller, as portrayed by Ethan Hawke in Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed,” is a man who has been divorced, whose son is dead and who lives in relative isolation. His life is not particularly out of the ordinary. Couples frequently get divorced, young people often pass away too soon and isolation, although not often

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
