Tri-campus splits over Texas abortion law

Maggie Eastland | Monday, September 13, 2021

The tri-campus community, known for its active debate over abortion, remains divided over Senate Bill 8, a new law enacted in Texas that prohibits abortions after about six weeks, or once a fetal heartbeat can be detected.  The Supreme Court struck down an emergency appeal to stop the bill Sept. 1 in a 5-4 vote

The real unknowns of the Pfizer vaccine: A modest proposal

Ryan Israel | Friday, April 9, 2021

In a recent letter to the editor, a pair of esteemed and clearly well-educated Notre Dame graduate students highlighted a grave issue related to the Pfizer vaccine currently being doled out to Notre Dame students. Specifically, that the vaccine makes use of an aborted fetal cell. Their outrage is understandable and must be adequately addressed.

There’s something missing from our abortion debates

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, April 6, 2021

This semester, my Thursday nights are usually entirely forgettable — I have class until 5:10 p.m., so when I get home my brain is completely fried. My roommates are usually at work, so I boil some pasta, change into sweats and watch a few episodes of whatever show I happen to be binging. A few

Anti-abortion is not pro-life

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, March 25, 2021

To be anti-abortion is to not be pro-life. More often than not, pro-lifers I have met have not been so vocal about causes like education, income equity and healthcare as they have been about their hypocrisy and moral superiority. There is nothing Christian about restricting healthcare and chastising women who are faced with an impossible

Law professor Amy Coney Barrett confirmed to Supreme Court

Alysa Guffey | Monday, October 26, 2020

The U.S. Senate voted 52-48 to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett as an associate justice on the Supreme Court Monday evening, finalizing one of the quickest confirmation processes in Supreme Court history as Republicans rushed to complete her appointment just eight days before the general election. She can begin work Tuesday. The confirmation advanced to

Lou Holtz and Notre Dame’s hypocrisy

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, September 8, 2020

Last month, Lou Holtz spoke at the Republican National Convention. During his speech he called out former Vice President Biden for his support of abortion rights and lauded President Trump’s pro-life agenda. He said Biden and other Catholic politicians who held similar views are “Catholic in name only,” meaning radical pro-choice actions taken and positions

‘Never Rarely Sometimes Always’ is the best film of the year

Aidan O'Malley | Tuesday, April 7, 2020

So far, at least; it’s only April. But the latest from director Eliza Hittman (“Beach Rats”) is a bracingly honest snapshot of female fortitude, cast against the backdrop of a country where women’s choices (and their stories) are often stripped away. The film is about an abortion. No matter what side of the aisle you’re

Tackling abortion

Vince Mallett | Thursday, April 2, 2020

I have to be upfront about one thing: I don’t have anything to contribute to the coronavirus conversation. My colleagues and others have done a wonderful job covering the virus, its effects on the tri-campus community and the challenges (and joys!) of living at home amidst the pandemic.  Instead, I’ve decided to make my column this week

Understanding the Louisiana abortion case

Blake Ziegler | Wednesday, October 9, 2019

Last week, Respect Life Week brought abortion to the forefront of campus discussion. As seen through a series of campus events and viewpoints in The Observer, abortion is a heated topic at this university. However, regardless of one’s opinion, one must recognize that panels, opinion pieces and debates on social media are not enough to

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
