All roads lead to Notre Dame

Jack Sirianni | Wednesday, May 17, 2023

It was a sight that was hard to forget as I made the turn from East Angela Boulevard onto Notre Dame Avenue for the first time. It was so much more than the view. As I lay there in the back seat, wedged between the mounds of snacks and clothes, I stood on the precipice

London: a playlist

Long time no see! The time has come to grace Viewpoint with a very Scene-esque Inside Column! In accordance with my last Viewpoint pieces — “Video didn’t kill the radio star” (2020) and “Public service announcement: revive the music scene” (2021) — music is at the forefront. How I became a new urbanist and why you should too

G. Matthew Molinsky | Thursday, February 6, 2020

During a six-week stint abroad in Rome, I fell in love with the European city. I lived in a two-bedroom apartment on the second floor of a seven-story apartment building in the neighborhood of Garbatella. Every day, I made the 15-minute commute by metro to the Notre Dame Global Gateway, located a few blocks from

Leaving my comfort zone

Erin Grimes | Wednesday, February 6, 2019

Hallo again from Innsbruck! My first semester here has just ended and a much-needed month long break has started. (The semester timing in Austria is different than the timing in the United States.) Here’s a small list of what have I learned this semester: how to navigate through airports and train stations, how to be

An American abroad in the time of Trump

Jack Rooney | Wednesday, January 25, 2017

Every time I open my mouth in Ireland, somebody asks me about Donald Trump. My American accent gives me away, and everyone from curious taxi drivers and bartenders to the person sitting at the next table at Starbucks want to hear what I have to say about the new president. It’s been like this since

My experience abroad

Emma O'Brien | Monday, September 12, 2016

Growing up, I’ve always had a passion for traveling to places I’d never been before. I didn’t realize just how strong that passion could be until my sophomore year of high school when I decided to go on a school trip to London, Paris and Barcelona. Honestly, going on this trip was the last thing

What does it mean, to live in a room?

Renee Griffin | Thursday, September 8, 2016

The month is January, the city is London and the building is Notre Dame’s Conway Hall. Flat 301 houses 10 girls, split between two quads and a double, with beds thrown into high lofts to make space for the few possessions that fit into the overfilled suitcases brought across the Atlantic. Fast forward to May,

A wish for the new semester

Rebecca Feng | Friday, August 26, 2016

Another semester of uncertainty, and thus, of opportunities. Words carry weight, and weight fills hearts; words bring hope and hope brightens lives; words redefine beauty, and beauty shapes minds. To discover the beauty in others’ happiness, not judging it but simply portraying it in words, is the deepest joy of an observer, I guess. “You

A deeper understanding of the world through service

Anthony Derouin | Thursday, October 1, 2015

This past summer I had the privilege of participating in the International Summer Service Learning Program (ISSLP). It was an experience that truly met and exceeded all of my expectations for studying, traveling and doing service abroad. I made many amazing new friends, saw breathtaking sights, experienced an incredible culture while sharing my own, tried a whole new palette

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
