Why you should read your horoscope

Nicole Simon | Thursday, March 7, 2019

I’ll admit it, I read my horoscope. I don’t necessarily read it every day, and I certainly don’t make my life decisions according to it.  But, I definitely read my horoscope more often than most. It started as somewhat of a joke because, like many people, I found it to be freakishly accurate. Every time

‘Tangible’ advice from a senior

Adam Ramos | Wednesday, April 25, 2018

After four years of writing for The Observer, the time has finally come to write my final inside column. So, in line with many that have come before me, here comes some reflective advice. And while I endorse the classic senior recommendations of “Always try new things” and “Take advantage of Notre Dame’s bountiful resources,”

To freshman: It’s going to be ok

Courtney Phelan | Wednesday, September 14, 2016

You’re a few weeks into this college thing and you’re feeling overwhelmed. Maybe you’re feeling lonely and like everyone else already has more friends. Maybe you’re feeling the opposite of lonely, like you’re surrounded by people you don’t know and you don’t like and you don’t know how to get away from them. Maybe you’re

A few words for the sophomores

Megan Valley | Thursday, September 1, 2016

As the new year gets started, everyone has advice for freshmen; there are entire shelves of books in your local Barnes & Noble about adjusting to college life. Most freshmen need some sort of help, but they’re not the only ones. I’d like to address the sophomores out there. The summer after my freshman year at

To my sisters

Rachel O'Grady | Friday, March 18, 2016

“Here’s to strong women — may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.” — Unknown I want my sisters, Caroline and Alexandra, to know that it isn’t about being women. For my last column, I wrote about how we are O’Grady’s and therefore we “try, don’t cry.” But it is fundamentally important

Just freshman things

Michael Fliotsos | Tuesday, August 25, 2015

Another summer has come and gone, meaning those of us returning to campus will experience once again the drawstring-bag toting, loaded-cargo-shorts wearing, staring-at-the-Notre-Dame-mobile-app-map freshmen. Before you ask, no, this is not going to be a ‘freshmen are the most annoying thing ever’ column. Trust me, I would not have accepted an RA position if these things actually

My education (with some help from my friends)

Matt Miklavic | Thursday, April 23, 2015

Robert Frost famously stated, “I can sum up everything I’ve learned in life in three words: It goes on.” I am no Robert Frost. As I look back on my time at Notre Dame, I’ve learned far too much to incorporate into three words. But I tried to keep it short: Embrace your dorm. For

The places we will go

Matt Miklavic | Wednesday, August 27, 2014

Dr. Seuss once said, “You will come to a place where the streets are not marked. Some windows are lighted, but mostly they’re darked.”  Seuss, surprisingly enough, wasn’t referring to the netherworld of South Bend. Rather, he was speaking to the paths we will find and “The Places You Will Go.” His work and those

On Friday in South Dining Hall’s Oak Room, AnnaLee Rice, a Tocqueville Fellow and senior political science major who will work at Red Edge Digital Advocacy, organized and moderated a “Seniors for Lunch” panel to give seniors a chance to look back and share advice on the undergraduate experience. The four seniors comprising the panel

A senior reminisces

James Vignali | Monday, February 24, 2014

Choosing to attend Notre Dame was hard for me — not because I didn’t think it was a great school — I’m just really bad at making decisions, and this one felt like life-and-death. In the end, I decided that the Notre Dame community really won out. At all the schools I had visited, I

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
