lettertotheeditor | Monday, November 21, 2022

For the past week, I have been reading “The Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin; during this time, I have also been reflecting on the Supreme Court hearings on affirmative action that took place on Monday, Oct. 31. On Thursday, while I was reading the book’s chapter on money (Chapter 7), I followed Rubin as she reflected on the

Break the cycle: A time for justice

Letter to the Editor | Friday, May 7, 2021

The Derek Chauvin verdict has revived last summer’s hopes for transformative social change. The day following the Chauvin verdict, Fr. Jenkins called on the Notre Dame community “to seek justice, foster solidarity and fight racism and bigotry anywhere and in any form.” While a number of laudable teaching and scholarly initiatives have been undertaken throughout the University to

Hasan Minhaj spotlights different issues in ‘Patriot Act’

Nicholas Ottone | Tuesday, November 13, 2018

I belong. I belong to the this University (even after graduation). I belong to this nation. I belong. It isn’t something I’ve always felt confident about, this sense of belonging. Although born and raised in the United States, I grew up with an acute awareness that my last name, Fernandez, marked me as different. It

BridgeND | Thursday, October 6, 2016

The following is a hypothetical conversation between Betty and Elena. Betty: Hey, did you go to that meeting the other night? Elena: The one about affirmative action and women?  Nah, I didn’t agree with their position. Betty: Really? You know, I think we should rethink the affirmative action system; I agree with them. Elena: How

Race still matters

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, April 24, 2014

It was with great distaste that I heard the verdict on one of the Supreme Court’s recent rulings. The decision in Schuette v. BAMN, the aforementioned case, concluded that there is no authority in the Constitution of the United States that prohibits the cumulative voter’s determination, in the state of Michigan, to ban the use of

Preferential treatment no more

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, April 23, 2014

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court voted 6-2 in Schuette v. BAMN to allow states to place bans on public universities taking race into account when considering admission of prospective students. Perhaps the most striking note about this decision was its margin. On what has been a controversial issue, the ruling was decisively in favor of
