Andrew McGuinness | Friday, February 3, 2023

For the second straight winter, the coaching carousel disrupted the coaching staff in South Bend. Few moments in recent Notre Dame football memory caused as much mayhem as Brian Kelly’s sudden departure to LSU last November. The departure of offensive coordinator Tommy Rees isn’t as program-altering — or as sudden — as Kelly’s exit. But,

Irish defense finds much-needed clutch gene late against Syracuse

J.J. Post | Saturday, October 29, 2022

SYRACUSE, New York — For a moment, early on in the fourth quarter, it felt like Notre Dame was spiraling toward collapse.  Syracuse backup quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson had engineered consecutive scoring drives, finding his rhythm after a shaky start to the tune of a 5-7 and 104-yard performance on those scoring drives. Notre Dame’s

After a devastating defeat against unranked Marshall, the Irish are looking to regroup and revitalize this weekend at home against Cal. Irish defense embraces Golden’s style of play ahead of 2022 season

Nate Moller | Friday, April 22, 2022

After an impressive season last year, there are lofty expectations for the Irish defense this season under new defensive coordinator Al Golden. With plenty of talent returning on the defensive side of the ball, the Irish have worked hard to learn Golden’s system and develop further as a unit in preparation for the 2022 season.

This college football season has been unlike any in recent memory in terms of coaching changes. It isn’t even November yet and there are already seven FBS college football programs that are looking for a future head football coach: USC, Miami, Illinois, Maryland, South Carolina, North Texas and Central Florida. That number will probably rise when the

Klaus: A tribute to Al Golden

Ryan Klaus | Wednesday, October 28, 2015

Miami fired their head coach, Al Golden, this past weekend following a woefully lopsided 58-0 loss to Clemson Saturday. There had been a sense around the Miami program all season that Golden’s tenure would soon come to an end. From the Hurricanes’ first loss in early October, Miami fans have not held back in publicly

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
