The visceral doom of Ben Frost’s ‘The Centre Cannot Hold’

Adrian Mark Lore | Monday, October 9, 2017

We stand on the shoulders of giants, but refuse to question their infallibility. This noxious rigidity is the metastasis of blind faith: who are our “forefathers” and why do we care? What do they know that we know not better now? This anti-dogmatic thesis saturates Ben Frost’s latest studio record, “The Centre Cannot Hold,” with

Yves Tumor releases transcendent ambient dance record

Adrian Mark Lore | Friday, October 6, 2017

It’s difficult to find one unifying thematic focus point among the various ideas Yves Tumor (Sean Bowie) transmutes into vibrant soundscapes on his free, self-released record, “Experiencing the Deposit of Faith.” The record was announced by surprise, just as Tumor signed to trendsetting electronic and experimental music powerhouse Warp Records — a sign of great

Diamondstein and Sangam team up for striking dark ambient duet

Adrian Mark Lore | Thursday, September 7, 2017

Be skeptical of ambient music; that’s rule number one. As a devout fan of the genre, it’s easy for me to spot the posers — and the heavens know they come a dime a dozen — but the untrained reader should be careful. Anyone can slap a synth onto a drone — disregarding harmony, atmosphere

Will Wiesenfeld changes pace on new Geotic record

Adrian Mark Lore | Thursday, April 20, 2017

Admittedly, I had a lingering bad feeling about Will Wiesenfeld’s new record as Geotic. More widely known for his angsty synth-pop project Baths, Wiesenfeld occasionally retreats to his Geotic alter-ego as a form of escape. And it’s a retreat indeed: As Wiesenfeld himself describes it, while his music as Baths is composed for “active listening,”

‘A Shadow in Time’ is a eulogy for the past

Adrian Mark Lore | Wednesday, February 1, 2017

A memory is an echo. Powerful events and acutely felt emotions are burned into our minds; people and places trigger them and they repeat. Sometimes the recollections haunt us, like tragedies we cannot get out of mind. When this happens, the repetition is slow and torturous. We relive the experience in all of its intense

Brian Eno’s ‘Reflection’ is a meditation on meditation

Adrian Mark Lore | Tuesday, January 24, 2017

Released in 1978, Brian Eno’s groundbreaking ambient record, “Ambient 1: Music for Airports” — the first of a four-part atmospheric composition series — must have felt like a betrayal of sorts, to some. A founding and then-former member of Roxy Music, Eno had launched his solo career only a handful of albums prior, most of

Elevating music: a case for ambient

Christian Bunker | Tuesday, October 25, 2016

There are points in life that deserve a soundtrack. You probably imagined the sound of a triumphant fanfare the last time you got an ‘A’ on a test, or a high energy rock anthem while you were getting ready to go out last Friday. However, it’s undeniable that American popular music is applicable only to

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
