‘Moxie:’ A feel-good, feminist film

Angela Mathew | Monday, March 8, 2021

“Moxie,” a recently released Netflix original movie, tells the story of girls at a high school in Oregon standing up to sexist norms. The film, directed by Amy Poehler, is based on the young adult novel by Jennifer Mathieu.  “Moxie” brings up a lot of the issues which have plagued high school girls for years:

Learning civility from ‘Parks and Rec’

Nia Sylva | Friday, October 9, 2020

The state of bipartisan political relations in this country is dire, to say the very least. Anyone who had the pleasure of witnessing last week’s mudslinging presidential debate knows that to be true. The disrespect that tends to abound in the public sphere — between the men and women who are supposed to be working

Yas Queen! ‘Broad City’ season four’s fresh comedy and meaningful politics

Maggie Walsh | Tuesday, November 28, 2017

Four and three and two and one. Cue the psychedelic, catchy title sequence because “Broad City” is funnier, smarter and more relevant than ever. Matthew Munhall | Monday, February 16, 2015

“Saturday Night Live” celebrated its 40th anniversary this weekend with a star-studded, three-and-a-half hour special that aired, ironically, on Sunday night. SNL has always been hit-or-miss, varying wildly in quality from sketch-to-sketch. It’s just that in its four decades as a sketch comedy show, the show has racked up such a collection of highs —

Allie Tollaksen | Wednesday, January 14, 2015

George Clooney is known as a prankster, the Sexiest Man Alive and, of course, an award-winning actor, but he’s also notorious in Hollywood for growing into his role as an activist. From speaking out for gender equality in the documentary “Half the Sky” to getting arrested for protesting in Sudan, Clooney has certainly established himself

Think on ink – ‘Yes Please!’

Caelin Miltko | Monday, November 3, 2014

I’ve read a number of celebrity autobiographies in the last six months. I devoured Lena Dunham’s “Not That Kind of Girl,” suffered through Jenny Mollen’s “i like you just the way i am,” found myself astounded at Ann Patchett’s “The Getaway Car” and finally got around to starting Tina Fey’s “Bossypants.” Every one of

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
