Irish come just short of back-to-back titles as starters break records

Ellen Geyer and Charlotte Edmonds | Friday, May 17, 2019

Despite falling just short of a back-to-back national championship, the Irish had one of their most elite teams in program history — shattering records both individually and as a unit. Under Naismith Hall of Fame head coach Muffet McGraw, Notre Dame made a deep tournament run and sent five players to the WNBA draft, recording

Arike Ogunbowale selected No. 5 overall by Dallas Wings

Elizabeth Greason | Thursday, April 11, 2019

Senior guard Arike Ogunbowale was selected as the No. 5 overall pick in the first round of the WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings. Ogunbowale has been one of top names in this year’s draft class since she made back-to-back buzzer-beaters to defeat UConn and Mississippi State in the 2018 Final Four and became the

Irish fall short of going back-to-back, lose in national championship thriller

Elizabeth Greason | Monday, April 8, 2019

TAMPA, Fla. — “Do I miss? Do I miss it?” Arike Ogunbowale was frantic after the first of the two free throws she had been awarded with 1.9 seconds remaining and a two-point deficit rolled off the rim. She doubled over and clutched her head, as her teammates looked on in shock at the 80%

Geyer: Arike is not responsible

Ellen Geyer | Monday, April 8, 2019

TAMPA, Fla. — It’s too much. Asking a 22-year-old to win a national championship two years in a row is too much. Is Arike Ogunbowale inherently and irrefutably capable of doing it? Yes. Should she be expected to? Not in any universe. Despite her standing as the most elite scorer in program history, and the

Irish set to face rival Huskies in rematch of last year’s overtime semifinal game

Hayden Adams | Friday, April 5, 2019

Like the north and south poles of a magnet, Notre Dame and UConn women’s basketball always seem destined to meet. And this time, as always, it’s at the most crucial juncture of the postseason. The Irish (34-3, 14-2 ACC) and the Huskies (35-2, 16-0) will meet for the second time this season — in the

Five players. Ten thousand points. One shattered record. On Monday, Marina Mabrey, Arike Ogunbowale, Jessica Shepard, Brianna Turner and Jackie Young became the first-ever group of starters in NCAA Division I basketball — men’s or women’s — to score 10,000 career collegiate points, as they now sit at 10,070 as a unit. Geyer: Keep focus on players, not coaches’ rivalry

Ellen Geyer | Friday, April 5, 2019

Geno and Muffet. A tale as old as time (or at least as old as Geno). And every time UConn and Notre Dame play, it becomes the headline of the week. We all know how the story goes. Two St. Joe’s grads. Two Hall of Fame coaches. Two of the most elite names in the

Irish strike in final minutes of Sweet 16 to secure win over Texas A&M

Charlotte Edmonds | Monday, April 1, 2019

CHICAGO — With 6:46 remaining in the rematch of last year’s Sweet 16 against Texas A&M, senior guard Arike Ogunbowale reminded everyone in the Wintrust Arena why she became synonymous with clutch in last year’s tournament, having hit buzzer beaters in back-to-back games in the Final Four to clinch the program’s second national title. Jessica Shepard, Arike Ogunbowale prove to be powerhouses of Irish offense in win over Aggies

Elizabeth Greason | Monday, April 1, 2019

CHICAGO — It’s a remark the Irish coaching staff has dropped a number of times to compliment Jessica Shepard: “We don’t win the national championship without Jess.” And now they can amend that statement slightly: We don’t get past Texas A&M this year without Jess — and Arike. The first half of the game was all

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
