Martha Reilly | Friday, April 21, 2017

Though they hold two of the highest-ranking student positions in Notre Dame Army, Navy and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), Saint Mary’s seniors Emilie Vanneste and Megan O’Bryan salute the College for providing them with the confidence and leadership necessary to take on the roles of Army battalion commander and Air Force wing

Griffin: Future looks bright for young Irish core

Renee Griffin | Friday, November 18, 2016

Notre Dame seniors will be honored before the game Saturday for their last time playing in Notre Dame Stadium. After that, though, all eyes should be on the players who represent the program’s future rather than its past. This season is approaching its merciful end, and the best-case scenario — and an unlikely one — for

Kelly praises team’s effort against Army; says freshmen have come along

Renee Griffin | Tuesday, November 15, 2016

Irish head coach Brian Kelly had many positives to focus on in his Sunday teleconference following the 44-6 win against Army, which brought Notre Dame’s record to 4-6. One particular point of emphasis was the defensive improvement the Irish have displayed in recent games, with the effort against the Black Knights the most clear example

Notre Dame uses quick start to rout Army, 44-6

Alex Carson | Monday, November 14, 2016

SAN ANTONIO — Notre Dame has made a habit of quick starts this season; when sophomore receiver C.J. Sanders took the opening kickoff to the house Saturday, it marked the ninth time in 10 contests that Notre Dame had scored the game’s first points. Carson: Shamrock Series rarely worth losing home game

Alex Carson | Friday, November 11, 2016

If you take a look at next year’s Notre Dame football schedule, you might notice one thing is missing: the Shamrock Series. This weekend’s San Antonio showdown between the Irish and Army will mark the eighth, and final scheduled, installment of the annual-since-2009 neutral site game that’s allowed Notre Dame the opportunity to play home

Notre Dame takes on triple option, again

Renee Griffin | Friday, November 11, 2016

Notre Dame will get a chance to redeem itself against a triple option offense on Saturday, facing Army’s attack one week after losing by one point to a Navy offense that has all but trademarked the system. With a 5-4 record and an average of 410.2 yards gained per game — 320.3 of which come on the ground

Struggles leave Notre Dame grasping at recruits

Zach Klonsinski | Friday, November 11, 2016

Notre Dame is in full “hold-on-to-the-class” mode as it limps into San Antonio for the team’s Shamrock Series matchup with Army with a 3-6 record, according to Blue and Gold Illustrated recruiting analyst Bryan Driskell. “It’s kind of hard to go out there and beat Michigan and Ohio State and Penn State and Florida and

Predictions: Notre Dame vs. Army

Observer Sports Staff | Friday, November 11, 2016

Alex Carson, Assistant Managing Editor Saturday might be Army’s last chance at securing bowl eligibility. With a second FCS opponent on the horizon, and the Army-Navy Game coming after bowl selections are typically made, the Black Knights could need a victory to play postseason football for just the second time this millennium. Logic says that,

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
