Notre Dame News: A Timeline

Observer Staff Report | Friday, August 17, 2018

Football team goes to BCS National Championship After years of mediocre football at Notre Dame Stadium, the storyline changed dramatically in 2012, when the Irish posted a perfect regular season en route to a BCS National Championship Game loss to Alabama. A lights-out defense, led by Heisman Trophy runner-up linebacker Manti Te’o, propelled the Irish

Following the backlash against a lecture given by political scientist Charles Murray last spring, the department of Africana Studies initiated the Race and Ideas Lecture Series in partnership with several other academic departments. The second speaker in that series, Dr. Carol Anderson of Emory University spoke on Wednesday night about her most recent book, “White

Lessons from the kids suing Trump over climate change

Sarah Cate Baker | Monday, May 1, 2017

You may have recently heard of the 21 kids suing Donald Trump and his administration over its lack of action on climate change. The cohort ranges in age from 9 to 20 years old — though most are teenagers — and hail from nine different states across the Pacific Northwest, the South, Alaska and Hawaii. The rest

Observer Editorial: Seniors should have more say in Commencement process

Observer Editorial Board | Friday, March 3, 2017

The University announced Thursday morning that the 2017 Commencement speaker will be Vice President Mike Pence. A University spokesperson Thursday declined to say whether or not the University had invited President Donald Trump. The debate over whether or not Trump should have been invited to speak at Notre Dame’s graduation ceremony was the most divisive

The future of the Democratic party

Liam Stewart | Monday, January 30, 2017

Former President Barack Obama suggested in an exit interview last month that, had he run again in the 2016 presidential election, he could have secured himself a third term in the White House. “I’m confident that if I — if I had run again and articulated it, I think I could’ve mobilized a majority of

Slow down, puzzle more

Nora McGreevy | Friday, January 20, 2017

It’s a common trope, at least in my experience, for reporters to inquire about the downtime hobbies of their celebrity interviewees. You see it all over the internet, in articles and video clips: to unwind, Oprah will occasionally shut herself in her closet in the middle of the work day to collect her thoughts. When

The danger of normalizing an abnormal candidate

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, January 19, 2017

I am writing in response to a Letter to the Editor published Jan. 18, titled “Why We Should Invite Donald Trump to Commencement.” In this article, the author argues that President-elect Donald Trump should be invited to speak at this year’s commencement ceremony in order to preserve the University’s history of presidential speakers as well as

Why we should invite Donald Trump to Commencement

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, January 18, 2017

I’m trying to think who’s under more pressure at ND right now: Brian Kelly or Father Jenkins? One is coming off a 4-8 football season despite markedly high preseason expectations, while the other is confronted with the quandary of either abiding by the Notre Dame tradition of inviting the United States president for Commencement or

Potential presidential playlists

Erin McAuliffe, Adam Ramos, Adrian Mark Lore, Jimmy Kemper, John Darr, Kelly McGarry, Nora McGreevy and Jack Riedy | Tuesday, November 8, 2016

During his two terms as president, Barack Obama graced us with playlists straight from the White House. To get in #ElectionDay spirit, Scene predicted the playlists we think each 2016 candidate would release upon election — and added in their likely reasoning. Clinton: “Formation” – Beyonce: “Say you’ll Bey on Team #Hillary2016, too.” I’ve got hot

Joseph R. Biden has become the second Catholic President in United States history, but his position on abortion is “one that cannot be condoned” according to Rev. Robert Dowd.

“Other bishops think that, because he’s a conscientious Catholic whose faith is obviously important to him, we should strike a more positive tone, particularly at the outset of his presidency. After all, in many ways Biden’s positions are more in line with Catholic teaching than Trump’s, particularly when it comes to migrants, refugees, climate issues, poverty and inequality,” Dowd continued.
