The most glaring threat to Notre Dame

Oluwatoni Akintola | Wednesday, May 17, 2023

Imagine God Quad during an ideal spring afternoon on campus. The sun beams boldly onto the University of Notre Dame and her iconic Golden Dome glows resplendently. But what if we’ve been blinded by its glare? What if, for all the resources and prestige brought to the University by another successful ND Day and a

You are enough

Caitlin Brannigan | Wednesday, September 7, 2022

In 2016, 15-time Grammy award-winning singer Alicia Keys gave up wearing makeup.  “I realized I became addicted to it; I didn’t feel comfortable without it,” Keys said. After years of adorning a full face of makeup almost every day, she felt that the pressure to constantly look perfect took a toll on her self-esteem: “I

Rap’s undeserved bad rap

Megumi Tamura | Thursday, September 30, 2021

Rap undeservedly gets a bad rap. People sometimes associate rap music with drugs, violence, the degradation of women, sexual exploitation, etc., but this blanket stereotype for an incredibly diverse and culturally important genre of music is unfair. Of course, some rappers and songs do include content which could be considered as perpetuating a negative message

Awe and beauty

Andrew Sveda | Monday, April 27, 2020

Last Wednesday, as many of you know, was the 50th Earth Day. Breathtaking snapshots of all that nature has to offer abounded on social media in celebration of the occasion. If we take the time to stop and look at them, photos like these are truly quite spectacular. They give us pause and make us

When a song becomes a love affair

Jim Moster | Wednesday, September 18, 2019

Cupid struck me with his arrow at 2 a.m. on a Thursday. He commenced his sneak-attack while I was playing my favorite weeknight game: How late can I stay up without falling asleep in my first class the next day? There are many variations of the game’s rules depending on who you ask, but my

The world will be saved by beauty

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, April 25, 2019

Individuals, corporations and even educational institutions like the University of Notre Dame have collectively donated over $1 billion toward the reconstruction of the Cathedral in the days following the tragic fire at Notre-Dame in Paris. The acts of benevolence have been lauded by some and harshly criticized by others. Among the tweets and statuses criticizing the

Representation matters at ‘Revisions: Contemporary Native Art’

Hanna Kennedy | Monday, February 18, 2019

You may have seen the posters on campus — they’re hard to miss. In the black and white photographs reproduced on the posters, images of Native American men have been annotated, edited and — quite literally — revised in red ink. These images depict a series of works by the artist Wendy Red Star (Apsáalooke/Crow),

The atlas of beauty

Alina Song | Thursday, September 13, 2018

I have always want to have a double-eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), a plastic surgery that would make my eyes appear fuller, brighter and more awake. I’m fully aware of the risk of having this surgery — it might hurt my eyesight and I might look uglier if the surgery failed. But I still hope to do

A sonnet by any other name …

Raymond Ramirez | Monday, August 28, 2017

One of the services we offer is providing quick and mostly accurate information regarding popular educational topics. In addition, I am a big fan of the ‘exception to the rule,’ especially when the exception holds a key to understanding great poetry. Accordingly, I’d like to pose and answer the question: When is a sonnet not

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
