The Trophy Hunter: Ranking the 21st century Best Picture winners, part 2

Jake Winningham | Friday, February 26, 2021

Yesterday, I ran through spots 20-11 on my countdown of this century’s Best Picture winners; today, I finish my ranking with a tight battle for the number one spot.    “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003) “Return of the King” occupies a strange spot in contemporary Oscar memory: one of

The Trophy Hunter: Ranking the 21st century Best Picture winners, part 1

Jake Winningham | Thursday, February 25, 2021

We’re in the doldrums of 2021’s award season; this weekend’s Golden Globes will set the template for the rest of the long run leading up to April’s Academy Awards. In the coming weeks, the Trophy Hunter will have plenty to say about this year’s film awards. For now, though, I’m content to rank the good,

The Oscars survive a dull show by looking to the future

Jake Winningham | Tuesday, February 11, 2020

Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony was the lowest-rated in the history of the Academy Awards, with viewership dropping below 25 million people for the first time this century. The issues that pervaded throughout this year’s telecast are familiar to longtime viewers of the award show: poorly written bits, inane speeches and questionable musical performances are not

The Trophy Hunter: Final 2020 Oscar Ballot

Jake Winningham | Friday, February 7, 2020

With the 92nd Academy Awards rapidly approaching, it’s time for me to complete my Trophy Hunter series with a final Oscar ballot. This is the first time that I’ve been able to watch all 53 nominated feature films and shorts prior to Sunday’s ceremony, and I’ve decided to celebrate with a full rundown of each

Best Acceptance Speech — Frances McDormand (Best Actress) By Adam Ramos, Scene Editor In an award show focused on brevity (the shortest acceptance speech earned a new jet ski), Frances McDormand still managed to deliver an electric moment upon accepting her award for Best Actress. The essential truths of ‘Moonlight’

R.J. Stempak | Friday, September 22, 2017

I got around to watching “Moonlight” at the end of the summer, just before returning to school. The 2016 Best Picture perfectly executed what I hope to find in every film I watch: specificity. If you haven’t seen it, “Moonlight” is a fascinating look into the coming of age of a gay black man named

The Academy Awards once again full of surprises

Nora McGreevy | Tuesday, February 28, 2017

We can all identify at least one thing that surprised us about the 89th Academy Awards. It’s hard to be alive in the United States with functional Internet access and not possess at least an inkling of Sunday night’s dramatics: mayhem, Steve Harvey memes, justified anger, public statements of apology, awkward celebrity interviews and the New

Oscar Snubs: Best Picture noms lack ‘Joy’

Sam Fentress | Tuesday, January 26, 2016

Resting next to “Creed” and “Steve Jobs” on this year’s shelf of Academy snubs — in some cases, complete misses — is David O. Russell’s “Joy,” the vibrant, spry comedy that found unstable critical ground in its one-month run. David O. Russell directed “Joy,” but perhaps I should correct myself: “Joy” belongs wholeheartedly to Jennifer

Academy Awards betting guides

Miko Malabute | Thursday, February 19, 2015

This Sunday, the 87th Academy Awards will reveal the year’s most brilliant pictures, celebrate the most heart-warming soundtracks and scores, commend the best directors, actors and actresses and coronate every other superlative in the movie business for their work and talent. Naturally, I looked to see what the “odds” (or “bets,” as presented by Las Vegas)

Joseph R. Biden has become the second Catholic President in United States history, but his position on abortion is “one that cannot be condoned” according to Rev. Robert Dowd.

“Other bishops think that, because he’s a conscientious Catholic whose faith is obviously important to him, we should strike a more positive tone, particularly at the outset of his presidency. After all, in many ways Biden’s positions are more in line with Catholic teaching than Trump’s, particularly when it comes to migrants, refugees, climate issues, poverty and inequality,” Dowd continued.
