University to revoke former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick’s honorary degree

Observer Staff Report | Saturday, February 16, 2019

Notre Dame is rescinding former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick’s honorary degree, the administration announced in a statement Saturday. The decision comes in response to the results of the Vatican’s canonical trial, which defrocked McCarrick on Saturday after finding he had broken his vows as a priest by sexually abusing minors and adults. “The Vatican has announced

Seeds on rocky soil: A history of African-American comedy

Matthew Macke | Wednesday, September 7, 2016

There is a concept in history called the “Great Man theory” which posits that the past is just a series of events occurring due to the influence of … great men. Inherent chauvinism aside, it’s an interesting way to look at history and an even more interesting way to look at popular culture. Here the

Do not be too hasty to pull Cosby’s degree

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, February 24, 2016

I would like to suggest a simple solution to the question of Bill Cosby’s honorary degree. If there is ever a court finding, either civil or criminal, that determines Cosby engaged in behavior for which a Notre Dame employee would be fired or a student expelled, then it would be appropriate for the University to

Another reason to revoke Cosby’s degree

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, February 24, 2016

Pull Bill Cosby’s honorary degree? In a word, yes. Do it now. Do it yesterday. I won’t belabor the well-known disgusting facts of the current allegations, which on their own merit pulling that degree. I want to take this opportunity to highlight another lesser-known incident no one at Notre Dame should ever forget. The incident

Hannibal Buress’ straightforward hilarity in ‘Comedy Camisado’

Adam Ramos | Tuesday, February 16, 2016

On his third major stand-up special “Comedy Camisado” Hannibal Buress enters the stage quietly, letting out one thank you and a clap before getting into his first bit. Dressed in modest, dark clothing, Buress makes it clear from the get-go that his act lacks pizzazz. Fortunately it is in this simplicity that the Chicago native shines

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
