Irish head to Duke for Brey’s last game at Cameron

Liam Coolican | Tuesday, February 14, 2023

Mike Brey and Mike Krzyzewski on a pickleball team at the Final Four? The possibility isn’t as far-fetched as it seems.  “I haven’t really been able to talk to him since I made the announcement I was stepping down,” Brey said of the legendary former Duke coach who retired at the end of last season.

Adams: The real pivot point for Mike Brey’s program

Hayden Adams | Wednesday, January 29, 2020

As I wrote the summary of the Notre Dame men’s basketball team’s 85-84 loss at No. 5 Florida State, I struggled to keep the story as objective as possible. I fought my fingers to not type the various adjectives that would turn the wrap into an editorial. But now, I no longer have to hold

Hayden Adams | Tuesday, December 10, 2019

The ball is up in the air, and as it reaches the apex of its trajectory and comes down toward the rim, there’s a small glimmer of hope that it may actually go through the net. Watching on TV, the broadcast view makes the ball look right on target, until it passes in front of

Shooting, turnovers plague Notre Dame as season ends with loss to Penn State

Benjamin Padanilam | Tuesday, March 20, 2018

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story was published online March 17. Not even St. Patrick’s Day could bring some luck to the Irish on Saturday. For the last few years of its success, Notre Dame has built its program into one that can shoot from beyond the arc, pass the ball around the

Mazurek: Despite tough season, Irish should hold their heads high

Marek Mazurek | Tuesday, March 20, 2018

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story was published online March 17. It wasn’t supposed to end this way for Notre Dame. Not in the NIT. Not with senior forward Bonzie Colson on the bench with yet another injury to his left foot. And it certainly wasn’t supposed to end on St. Patrick’s Day

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
