Fred again.. and the sounds of ‘Actual Life’

Brendan Nolte | Thursday, September 15, 2022

You’ve known about Fred John Philip Gibson (aka Fred again..) for far longer than you might think. The 29-year-old multitalented music producer and songwriter has spent the better part of the last decade helping some of the biggest artists in the world create their own work, for the most part opting to remain behind the

Male producers are not the secret sauce in female music

Colleen Fischer | Thursday, October 8, 2020

We need to change how we talk about celebrity male producers in regard to female artists. It’s fun to listen to celebrity male producers like Jack Antonoff and Mark Ronson talk about the creative process behind some of the greatest pop records of the last decade. Mark Ronson’s stories are one of my favorite parts

Brian Eno’s ‘Reflection’ is a meditation on meditation

Adrian Mark Lore | Tuesday, January 24, 2017

Released in 1978, Brian Eno’s groundbreaking ambient record, “Ambient 1: Music for Airports” — the first of a four-part atmospheric composition series — must have felt like a betrayal of sorts, to some. Elevating music: a case for ambient

Christian Bunker | Tuesday, October 25, 2016

Brian Eno makes a titanic return on ‘The Ship’

Adrian Mark Lore | Monday, April 18, 2016

The sinking is slow, cold and dismal like the siren call of a foghorn. Trapped in the bowels of an industrial massive, passengers and their histories are inextricably tied to their maritime casket. They move in vertical descent down a deep blue axis of perishing; in the ship’s mortality it is the closest one such

Underworld underwhelms with new album

Adrian Mark Lore | Wednesday, March 30, 2016

Extra! Extra! The latest installation of the beloved action-techno LP series “Underworld: The Major Motion Picture” is set, this time, in the wilderness of Barbara’s eyes — the band-members’ newest muse interpreted by award-winning synthesizers and drum machines — and once again directed and produced by the infamous Rick Smith and Karl Hyde. Unlike their

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
