Let’s talk about H.R.1

BridgeND | Wednesday, March 17, 2021

In a recent opinion piece, Mike Pence wrote that “after a year in which our nation has endured a global pandemic, economic hardship and a contentious election, now is not the time to further inflame passion and division. It’s time for our nation’s leaders to help heal America.” No, he did not write this in

Biden’s big bill is necessary, but temporary

BridgeND | Wednesday, March 3, 2021

President Biden’s massive virus relief bill heads to the Senate after passing the House on Saturday. Currently, it is $1.9 trillion in aid meant to stimulate the lagging U.S. economy and bolster employment. Even if the Senate whittles it down somewhat, it will still be roughly twice the size (after inflation adjustments) of the stimulus

The child allowance debate reveals the emptiness of ‘working-class conservatism’

BridgeND | Wednesday, February 17, 2021

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the most significant intraparty division in Washington recently is related to the second impeachment of President Donald Trump, with seven Republicans joining Democrats in voting to convict him for incitement of insurrection — and you might even be right. What the anti-ACB protest says about student political activism

BridgeND | Wednesday, November 4, 2020

When my close friend told me that he was planning an anti-Amy Coney Barrett protest, I initially was impressed with his determination but skeptical about how the protest would actually go. I thought maybe 50 people would show up and at best the protest may raise a few eyebrows in the administration. I certainly did

The case for civic engagement on college campuses

BridgeND | Wednesday, September 23, 2020

As the 2020 election looms and the first debate nears, many college students across the country are voting in a presidential race for the first time. While voting looks different this year due to COVID-19, it is crucial — perhaps more important that ever — to ensure we are still able to cast our ballots.

First things first –– from the leaders and members of BridgeND, from whom you’ll be hearing in a biweekly column this year, welcome back to campus! It’s impossible to ignore the ways in which the next few months will be different from an ordinary semester at Notre Dame with contact among friends limited. And regrettably,

A new moderate

BridgeND | Thursday, December 5, 2019

Needless to say, politics as of recent has taken a turn from how they have traditionally been discussed. This has led to the unfortunate labeling of opposing sides, which has cut down on the amount of discussion between people of opposing viewpoints. For many, the only time they are exposed to perspectives that drastically differ

BridgeND | Thursday, November 14, 2019

“Political polarization” is a term that is often thrown around in the media and news. By definition, political polarization is the “divergence of political attitudes and ideas to the ideological extreme.” Polarization is the idea of “us” and “them,” and this ideology can and does cause confusion and tension between those with differing views. This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
