O’Donoghue: The Philadelphia 76ers might be impending Champions

Dylan O’Donoghue | Thursday, February 17, 2022

It happened. The heavily anticipated trade between the Brooklyn Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers finally happened. It certainly lived up to the hype. Former league MVP James Harden, along with veteran power forward Paul Millsap, have been sent to Philadelphia in exchange for 3-time All-Star Ben Simmons, sharpshooter Seth Curry, Andre Drummond and two first-round

Zwiller: Winners and losers of the timing of the NBA offseason

Thomas Zwiller | Monday, November 9, 2020

On Oct. 11, when LeBron James hoisted the Larry O’Brien Trophy, it concluded a season that had stretched on for over a year because of a lengthy season suspension due to COVID-19. It had been an exhausting, tiring conclusion to a season that had seen the players live in a bubble for three months. However,

Coolican: Steve Nash hiring exemplifies sport’s diversity problem

Liam Coolican | Monday, September 14, 2020

Hiring a head coach in the NBA is challenging, especially on a team with dynamic superstars with big personalities like Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. It is certainly a difficult job for any coach to manage to keep the players content while still maintaining his authority, all while dealing with the tremendous expectations that come

Mulvena: The dumbest pro sports mascots

Connor Mulvena | Tuesday, November 5, 2019

I had a discussion with some friends recently that, while impressively moronic, has been on my mind for a few days now. We were thinking about the worst names and mascots in all of sports, and we each brought up a few teams who we didn’t think would spur debate but ended up being contentious.

Coolican: NBA needs to protect rights of players amidst Chinese backlash

Liam Coolican | Thursday, October 10, 2019

Sports players, coaches and managers are more than just who they are on the field. This has been shown by players like Lebron James, Colin Kapernick and Major League Soccer’s Alejandro Bedoya (who after scoring a goal in August grabbed the on-field microphone and told Congress to end gun violence), who have become influential social

Everett: Clippers might be just the right fit for Butler

Joe Everett | Thursday, September 20, 2018

On Tuesday league sources first notified The Athletic that Minnesota Timberwolves star Jimmy Butler met with head coach Tom Thibodeau in Los Angeles and requested a trade before his final contract season with the T-Wolves. Well alright then. The news comes less than a week before training camp, so obviously it’s less than ideal for

Manuel De Jesus | Thursday, June 25, 2015

After leading Notre Dame to a 32-6 record, its first ever ACC championship and a run to the Elite Eight, Jerian Grant can now add being a first-round pick in the NBA Draft to his list of accomplishments.   After waiting a little more than 30 minutes, Grant shook NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s hand as the

Collins, Sam not the problem

Vicky Jacobsen | Tuesday, February 25, 2014

By the time you read this, it will be old news. On Sunday, forward Jason Collins signed a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets, played his first game since April 17, and became the first openly gay man to compete in a major American professional league. In some ways, it was an almost anti-climatic milestone.

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
