The South is not a lost cause. I am not a lost cause.

BridgeND | Wednesday, March 22, 2023

Whether or not it is wholly acknowledged, identity plays an integral role in our interactions with both society and ourselves. Seeking to ascribe definite messages to the intangible aspects of personhood and identity cannot be ignored; it must be reckoned with. However, the manner in which this internal and external recognition is accomplished is not

One more time, with feeling: In response to the current campus climate

lettertotheeditor | Friday, October 7, 2022

Editor’s note: This letter includes mentions of sexual assault. A list of sexual assault reporting options and on-campus resources can be found on the Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s and Holy Cross websites.  I graduated in January, but I still live in South Bend and come to campus frequently. I am still connected to this community,

Julianna Conley | Wednesday, January 12, 2022

A quick text fired off to four current or former student-athletes: “Do you think your relationship with social media has changed since playing college sports?” From each of them, an immediate response: “Yes.” Online trolls are nothing new, with more than 30% of young adults experiencing cyberbullying before the age of 18. Greta Thunberg is just a kid

Patrick McKelvey | Wednesday, October 2, 2019

On Sept. 23, Swedish climate activist and 16-year-old Greta Thunberg spoke at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit. Her speech did not mince words: she accused, quite directly, the assembled leaders of ignoring science for their own personal political and monetary benefit, at the expense of people’s happiness and lives. “I shouldn’t be standing here,”

Letter to the Editor | Friday, January 26, 2018

Yesterday, a friend came to me with a text message sitting on the screen of her phone. Through the chatter and noise of the dining hall surrounding us, I pulled the device closer and scanned what was printed: Staring back, in unmistakable black iPhone lettering surrounded by a grey text box, were the words “you

Professors spark dialogue about compassion

Martha Reilly | Monday, November 21, 2016

Two professors organized a lecture about kindness and open-mindedness Friday at Saint Mary’s. Professor of English Laura Haigwood said introspection and self-transformation can lead to valuable societal change, but a failure to respect and understand others’ viewpoints contributes to a dangerous cycle. “Shaming, judging, competition, anger and violence, no matter how just our cause may be, evoke

‘Sticks and stones’ lied: words can always hurt

Amanda Peña | Thursday, January 16, 2014

Bullying always seemed like such a strange idea: some cool kid pushes nerds in the hallway or shoves freshmen into lockers. At least that’s what TV always told me. In reality though, it’s far more common than we may think, and we fail at teaching our kids how to recognize it and protect themselves from

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
