Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, April 19, 2023

Dear students and alumni that have signed “Losing Catholic Identity on SMC Campus,” This is a synopsis of a letter written in response to Friday’s letter to the editor. We, the student members of Saint Mary’s Sexuality and Gender Equity Club (SAGE) and Smicks for Choice, felt it was important to respond to the recent

Liam Kelly | Friday, March 3, 2023

Bishop Robert Barron, second-most-followed priest on social media and founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, spoke at Notre Dame Thursday evening and urged the University to commit itself to its Catholic character in all that it does. “A Catholic university is one in which Christ holds a central and organizing place in all the

Our communities are struggling. Are we to blame?

BridgeND | Wednesday, August 31, 2022

Our communities are increasingly divided and weakened. Is Notre Dame partially to blame? During the last presidential election, nearly eight in ten registered voters believed that their disagreements with the other side were not only about politics and policies, but “core American values.” While the right and left diagnose society’s ills differently, they surprisingly identify

On being an American Catholic

G. Matthew Molinsky | Thursday, March 5, 2020

My early teenage years were a time when I began to take a stronger interest in my faith. It was also the time when I became more aware of the injustices in America. Interestingly, this led to my Catholic identity becoming a way to escape from my duties as an American.  Having grown up saying

Why the Bible favors increasing the tuition

Davis Gonsalves | Thursday, March 8, 2018

I usually rank stuff in my articles, and although these are not rankings exactly, you should think of the following quotes as a collection of thoughts ranked equally at number one. I’m not upset about much, but I was absolutely shocked when members of our Notre Dame community were distressed by the tuition increase. It

Response to “Notre Dame doesn’t owe you birth control”

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, November 16, 2017

First, I would like to offer my support and appreciation to the University for reversing its oppressive decision to exclude birth control from employee health care plans. However, it is also necessary to address the rhetoric on campus that has encompassed the issue. Specifically, the letter to the editor entitled “Notre Dame doesn’t owe you

Notre Dame’s desire for secular acceptance

Eddie Damstra | Thursday, November 16, 2017

A little over a week ago, the University of Notre Dame stated that it will now provide contraceptives and abortifacients in University health insurance plans through a third-party insurer. No longer will the university limit the supplying of contraceptives to students and faculty who possess certain medical conditions. Rather, the supplying of contraceptives and abortifacients

Catholic identity and contraception

Letter to the Editor | Monday, November 13, 2017

In a reversal of its previous announcement, the administration revealed Tuesday its intention to continue offering faculty and students contraceptive coverage in University health insurance plans. It is quite a shocking decision given the money and effort poured into a four-year-long lawsuit challenging the Obama administration’s contraceptive mandate. More than shocking, however, the decision is

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
