Not to be dramatic

Kate Casper | Tuesday, September 5, 2023

In my castle made of Scotch Tape and digital photographs of high school memories and broken Christmas lights and piles of graphic tees my mom is begging me to donate, I decide: It’s probably time to leave the country. It’s not that I don’t love this place, where every photo is a reminder of “something

Dolby Atmos: #SwiftTok and sonic immersion

Adriana Perez | Wednesday, March 23, 2022

If you’re on #SwiftTok (the Taylor Swift side of TikTok), chances are you’ve probably heard her songs being played through Dolby Atmos. Some of these sounds have produced hilarious results, with music cut off in comical places and fragmented, echoing vocals. But, you may also have wondered, what the heck is Dolby Atmos? I personally

‘Brightside’ made me sad: How the new Lumineers album failed me

Anna Falk | Friday, January 21, 2022

As the seasons change throughout the year, so do people. In art, this is an important aspect to consider.  My life has been centered around music for as long as I can remember. Throughout this time, I’ve seen what and who I listen to change as I discover new artists and as the artists I

A season of change

Simon Vogel | Wednesday, October 6, 2021

Once again, it is fall in the Bend.  According to the sun, the Earth and the Encyclopedia Britannica, this means that on Sept. 22 the sun’s annual pathway and the celestial equator intersected, and that the division between night and day was equal. According to us students, this means themed Starbucks drinks, hoodies and scarves,

The philosophy of a broken laptop

Maria Leontaras | Friday, May 21, 2021

One day about two months ago, my life changed dramatically. No, it wasn’t retiring as Editor-in-Chief. The top half of my laptop popped open, and a few tiny screws clattered to the ground. I didn’t think much of it. If anything, I accepted the fact that art (an almost broken computer) imitates life (an almost

Endings just mean new beginnings

Elizabeth Prater | Wednesday, May 5, 2021

The end of a school year is always bittersweet. While writing large papers may feel like the magnum opus of finals week, leaving oneself craving a summertime bliss where homework and exams feel like a fleeting memory, I also would be lying if I said I didn’t completely miss the school year.  I used to

The Democratic party must change

Letter to the Editor | Monday, September 7, 2020

The attempted murder of Jacob Blake by the Kenosha Police on Aug. 23 is the latest in a long sequence of events that have made one thing crystal clear: the epidemic of police brutality in the United States is a direct effect of deep-rooted systemic racism in our government. This systemic racism is rooted in

What I hope for

Jackie O'Brien | Thursday, April 23, 2020

Graduating from the University of Notre Dame was my greatest childhood aspiration. It began with my earliest memories of attending a football game once or twice a year. I remember everything from the drive to campus, parking in White Field, hot chocolate at the games and of course sleeping in the back of the car

Minty fresh

Julianna Conley | Thursday, November 14, 2019

Like many ridiculously attractive young adults in coming-of-age films, I changed a lot this semester. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen: I’ve officially made the switch to mint toothpaste. For readers lacking intimate knowledge of my teeth brushing habits, I’ve spent the last 19 years polishing my pearly whites with Disney Princess bubblegum. An ardent opponent

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
