Smalstig: The Chicago Cubs should not be content with their current state of affairs

Gehrig Smalstig | Monday, April 12, 2021

If you could travel back in time to April of 2016 and tell any Cubs fan that they would not have put Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo or Javier Baez on a long term contract by the year 2021, they would have called you crazy. The core that took them to their first World Series win

McGuinness: Previewing the 2021 MLB season

Andrew McGuinness | Tuesday, April 6, 2021

There has arguably never been a more relieving Opening Day than 2021. After the longest year of almost everyone’s life, things are finally starting to get closer to normal again. Major League Baseball is the latest example. A full 162-game season. Fans returning to ballparks across the league. The Yankees probably being dominant, much to

Kalemkerian: MLB season preview

John Kalemkerian | Wednesday, March 24, 2021

The wait is finally over. Entering our last week without Major League baseball until next fall, now seems as good a time as ever to look forward to the upcoming season and predict how the full season and the playoffs will play out all the way until the Fall Classic.  AL East Division Winner: New

Coolican: Analyzing MLB offseason trades

Liam Coolican | Friday, February 12, 2021

Lost in the shuffle of all the major events in the sports world that have happened recently, this year’s MLB offseason has been one of the craziest in recent memory. Many teams, using the pandemic as an excuse to cut spending, traded away star players who were on expiring contracts, and contenders loaded up for

Moller: The return of baseball

Nate Moller | Friday, August 14, 2020

The return of Major League Baseball a few weeks ago was truly a blessing to me. It was the first time in months that I was able to sit on my couch in the evening and watch a sport that I truly love. While boxing, golf and a few other sports had been televised, there

Ivey: Don’t forget about the White Sox

Michael Ivey | Wednesday, November 1, 2017

On Oct. 24, the ESPN Stats and Info Twitter account tweeted an attempt to show how dominant the Los Angeles Dodgers have been in the postseason leading up to the World Series. The tweet read: “The Dodgers are 7-1 this postseason. The 1998 Yankees are the only team in the Wild Card Era to win

Ivey: Jerry Reinsdorf hurting Bulls, White Sox more than helping

Michael Ivey | Thursday, February 25, 2016

The Chicago White Sox signed free agent shortstop Jimmy Rollins to a minor-league contract yesterday. This move made White Sox fans like me ask a question we have been asking this franchise for a while now: why? With Rollins’ signing, the Sox are most likely not going to attempt to sign free agent shortstop Ian

Zuba: Baseball’s Opening Act

Samantha Zuba | Wednesday, April 22, 2015

And the award for most interesting division race before any MLB team has played 20 games goes to … the American League Central. Calling it a “race” might be a stretch because there is still a marathon’s worth of games left to play. There’s a lot of time for teams to fade, and there always

Zuba: MLB’s best offseason moves

Samantha Zuba | Tuesday, February 10, 2015

There should be an award for MLB’s best offseason acquisition. I guess there is, when the bold move pays off the next season in the form of a pennant or World Series title. Until then, the moves are just big and bold, not necessarily best. They don’t all pan out, and sometimes a team ends

Sant-Miller: Remember the ‘other’ captain

Aaron Sant-Miller | Sunday, September 28, 2014

Unless you have a burning distaste for the game of baseball, running in fear from every news piece, you will have heard that “The Captain” is retiring this year. Yes, Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has been on his farewell tour, going from stadium to stadium, receiving honor after honor and rightfully being celebrated as one

When the 2017 “Wonder Woman” film was released When the 2017 “Wonder Woman” film was released, many found the film exceptional, filled with female empowerment and inclusivity of women in Hollywood. It made me wonder if they saw the same movie I had watched, where a strong independent woman suddenly meets a man and willingly follows his every order, even though she’s a grade A baddie all on her own.

ICYMI: Saint Mary’s to require COVID-19 vaccinat ICYMI: Saint Mary’s to require COVID-19 vaccination for student enrollment in 2021-2022 academic year

College President Katie Conboy announced in a Monday email that all students are required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine for the upcoming academic year. The vaccine will be added to the list of mandatory student immunizations beginning in the 2021-2022 term.

“There is so much yet to learn about the COVID-19 virus, and while we are encouraged by the progress made thus far, we still see areas for concern; in particular the variant strains and what they could bring,” Conboy said. “For this reason, among others, we are making the bold choice to mandate student vaccines.”

According to Conboy, the College will offer exemption to the vaccine policy for proper medical and religious reasons.

In the wake of the University’s announcement of In the wake of the University’s announcement of Zahm House’s disbandment, The Observer began an investigation into the dorm’s so-called “troubling culture.”

The investigation revealed several incidents contributing to the administration’s decision, including Zahm residents’ disregard for and plans to alter COVID-19 tests as well as vandalism within and beyond the walls of the hall.

The Observer also obtained a series of email chains sent between roughly 200 Zahm residents from 2019-2020, in which students shared graphic and misogynistic jokes regarding sex and sexual assault.

Read more about COVID-19 cases and plans to alter results, annual vandalism costs, the disputed culture of the dorm, the Zahm residents’ take on the dorm’s closure and what the final decision means for Notre Dame residential life on The Observer’s website.
