Notre Dame professors comment on worsening U.S.-China relations

Liam Kelly | Thursday, February 23, 2023

Over the past few weeks, the United States has witnessed a heightening of tensions with China, raising concerns about a potential conflict between the two world powers. On Feb. 4, a U.S. F-22 fighter jet shot down a Chinese surveillance balloon over the Atlantic Ocean that had made its way across the U.S. after being

Voices on China policy

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, March 23, 2016

Last October, the student body received an email from University President Fr. John Jenkins announcing significant changes to the “Freedom of Association” policy. The original policy stipulated, “Notre Dame licensed products [could not] be manufactured in countries lacking a legal right for workers to organize and form independent labor unions of their own choosing.” China

The integrity of Chinese factories

Yuchen Zou | Wednesday, December 2, 2015

Recently, Notre Dame’s “China policy,” which launches a pilot program to manufacture its products in two Chinese factories, has caused a campus-wide debate. As an undergraduate student who doesn’t have much knowledge of labor laws, I don’t feel more qualified than any other student to comment on the policy itself. But still, as a Chinese

China’s deplorable religious policies

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, November 19, 2015

It was with great sadness that I learned last week Notre Dame will allow select mainland Chinese factories to manufacture Notre Dame licensed goods, on a pilot basis, so long as these factories meet certain rigorous labor standards. I realize this decision may be but a prelude to a more ominous one on whether to link

What to know about the apparel industry

Katherine Smart | Monday, November 9, 2015

The recent debate over the University’s pilot program to allow selected factories in China to manufacture University-licensed products has caused me to think of my own apparel choices. As a college student, how many times have I walked into the bookstore (or any clothing store for that matter) and shaken my fist at the ridiculously high prices? In

China policy violates Catholic Social Teaching

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, November 5, 2015

This letter is in response to the announcement made by University President Fr. John Jenkins that Notre Dame is reversing its policy of not making products in China, a country which — in violation of Catholic social teaching — does not allow freedom of association for workers. Given that Jenkins cites Catholic Social Teaching several times in

Progress the China Policy

Letter to the Editor | Monday, February 2, 2015

This month, Notre Dame’s Worker Participation Committee will be revisiting a long-held policy in the Licensing Codes of Conduct regarding freedom of association. The policy states that no apparel with the Notre Dame name or monogram may be manufactured in countries that outlaw independent labor unions in accordance with Catholic social teaching. This policy is

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
