‘Love Hard’: Predictable and cliche

Rose Androwich | Wednesday, December 1, 2021

Christmas movies are an interesting genre to explore. You have the utmost Christmas classics, and then you have the genre I like to call “horrible Christmas films.” The irony of “Love Hard” is that in some ways, it’s a failure to even the horrible Christmas films. Have you ever watched a horrible Christmas movie, but

‘Home Sweet Home Alone’: Devoid of sugar, spice or anything nice

Justin George | Thursday, November 18, 2021

It is not often that I get mad at a film for merely existing, but this, dear reader, is an exception. Since I must review it, let’s dive in. “Home Sweet Home Alone” is a sloppy rehash of the original “Home Alone,” but without any of the things that made “Home Alone” special. The film

November is underrated

Mannion McGinley | Friday, November 5, 2021

It’s Halloween night in my junior year of high school. My sister gets home from trick or treating, drops her bag full of candy on the counter and sprints up the stairs to her room.  About an hour later, I get a call from her to come upstairs.  I open the door and the entire

Ryan Israel and Claire Rafford | Tuesday, November 10, 2020

It’s 70 and sunny, but it’s also November so Christmas is right around the corner. Of course, the holiday wouldn’t be complete without Christmas music. You know the classics, but you might not know these two underappreciated Christmas albums. “The Christmas Album” — Delicate Steve By Ryan Israel, Scene Editor Most Christmas music is painfully

From the Archives: Christmas revisionism and satanic carols

Jim Moster, Mary Steurer, Evan McKenna and Meghan Pryor | Monday, December 9, 2019

Much of our holiday cheer comes from annual tradition. When Christmas songs start playing in the dining hall and colorful lights are strung up around campus, that’s when festivity truly begins.  Traditions, of course, tend to evolve over time. This process of change can be natural, but sometimes Christmas fanatics take things into their own

ND Chorale prepares traditional Christmas performance of Handel’s ‘Messiah’

Ciara Hopkinson | Friday, December 6, 2019

For nearly 30 years, the Notre Dame Chorale has ushered in the holiday season with their performance of George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah,” a wildly popular Baroque masterpiece that tells the story of Christianity in three parts. Music professor Alexander Blachly, director of the Chorale, described the piece as “indestructible.” “That’s the word that people usually

What about Thanksgiving?

Dessi Gomez | Thursday, November 14, 2019

With the first real snow on Monday and about two weeks until Thanksgiving Break, we are in the full swing of the holiday season. I always find myself getting so excited once October hits because there is still time to prepare for Halloween and embrace the fall season. But every year, without fail, once Halloween

Dorms celebrate Christmas traditions

Genevieve Redsten | Thursday, December 6, 2018

Across Notre Dame’s campus, there’s an unmistakable feeling that Christmas is in the air. Many dorms are celebrating the holiday season with their own unique traditions. Last week, many Carroll Hall residents could be seen sporting elf costumes, advertising Carroll’s highly-anticipated Carroll Christmas, which was held Saturday, Dec. 1. Junior Garrett Rethman, who is serving

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
