Thomas Zwiller | Friday, September 16, 2022

With the conclusion of a crazy Broncos vs. Seahawks game on Monday Night, a wild Week 1 has concluded. As we head into Week 2, I wanted to take a moment to look back on Week 1 and talk about some of the oddities. Wide Receiving Struggles: New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Green Bay Packers

Thomas: The Bengals’ blueprint: What it is, and who could follow?

Aidan Thomas | Thursday, February 10, 2022

The Cincinnati Bengals stunned the world in 2022. That statement remains true regardless of the result on Sunday night. But the question is: What got missed? The Bengals were a near consensus bottom-five or at least bottom-ten team. In what felt like a loaded AFC North, Cincinnati was given barely a chance to crack the

The legend of Evan McPherson

Thomas Zwiller | Monday, February 7, 2022

Swagger. Moxie. Confidence. When you read those words, and you think of football, you likely think of the quarterback, the position that has legends such as Joe Montana, Tom Brady and more recently Patrick Mahomes. The quarterback position tends to make icons. When the casual viewer watches the game, they tend to focus on the

Well, here we are, the Super Bowl matchup that everybody expected. In two short weeks, Matt Stafford and the Rams will battle Joe Burrow and the Bengals for a place in the history books. Kalemkerian: NFL divisional round predictions

John Kalemkerian | Tuesday, January 18, 2022

Continuing the trend of a great NFL season, Super Wild Card weekend gave us some great results and matchups to look forward to, although three blowouts marginally dulled the hype. From many fans’ perspectives (including this Giants fan), the Saturday and Sunday outcomes were about as good as could be hoped for, with the hated

Adams: My dumbest pro sports mascots

Hayden Adams | Monday, March 2, 2020

I haven’t yet taken over as Sports Editor, but as the time approaches for me to do so, I feel compelled to send off my predecessor, Connor Mulvena, by writing a tribute sports authority to his old piece on the dumbest pro sports mascots. So without further ado, in no particular order, here are mine.

Thomas: Rebuilding teams need to stop overvaluing the QB

Aidan Thomas | Thursday, January 23, 2020

The stage was set. I was in the Baumer Hall 24-hour lounge, watching the first half of the NFC championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers faced a 2nd and 9 at the Packers 18-yard line, already up 20-0. One spectator said, “I just want to see a

Waking the Echoes: Ross Browner

Mike Monaco | Thursday, October 30, 2014

For someone who repeatedly invokes the terms mythology, history and tradition to recount his football past, it’s fitting for Ross Browner to describe his playing style in similar terms — as a gladiator. “That’s what I always thought of it as, just being a destroyer and go in there as a gladiator, just really approaching

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
