Masin-Moyer: Ranking the presidential first pitches

Lucas Masin-Moyer | Tuesday, January 22, 2019

About a month ago, my parents sent me a list I made at age 6 of the top 25 things I liked. It’s quite an eclectic list that showed early signs of self-confidence (I ranked “me” at No. 7), a love for sports (baseball and the Yankees clocked in at No. 16 and No. 17

A writer’s response

Liam Stewart | Monday, February 27, 2017

Several months ago, I had the privilege of meeting Lt. Colonel Allen West: a decorated war veteran, former U.S. Congressman and a proud, black conservative. In the course of our conversation, he shared with me that the worst racism he experienced came from his liberal political opponents, many of whom believed a black man could

Don’t back down

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, January 25, 2017

In 1969, Hillary Clinton (then Hillary Rodham) gave the first student-offered commencement address at Wellesley College. Before she spoke, Sen. Edward Brooke talked about how unnecessary protests were at the time, a complete counter to Rodham’s speech about a youth dissatisfied with the current state of affairs. Hillary spoke, and responded truthfully and gracefully to the

Why have we elected an apprentice?

Gary Caruso | Friday, November 18, 2016

If Notre Dame could hire the high school football coach Gerry Faust (30-26-1) to manage its major university football program from 1981 to 1985, why not let American working-class voters choose an apprentice to occupy the White House? Three traditionally Democratically Rust Belt industrial swing states decided the election by a mere 107,000 votes — Wisconsin

Nationalism is not dead

Letter to the Editor | Friday, November 18, 2016

On Nov. 8, the American people took to the polls to let their voices be heard in our most vocal of democratic processes. And vocal they sure were. Donald Trump won in a surprising upset when compared to the polling data that had him losing handily. If the pundits and news sources were to be

My friend and I sat outside the Basilica, Our Lady in plain view, as we watched a compilation of Hillary Clinton’s campaign highlights. Tears came to our eyes, as the ups and downs flashed across the screen — moments of hope in nomination clinches, setbacks along the way. She and I, and many of my

Only losers don’t vote

News flash: Life sucks more than the tone of this presidential election, so get on with it — the election that is, not just life. Nothing along your earthly journey will be perfect, and nobody will please you all of the time. Your greatest national treasure in the United States is the privilege to be

We’re all just talking past each other

Courtney Phelan | Wednesday, November 2, 2016

This summer, I took a theology course at Notre Dame. It was an introduction to Christian theology and started with the very basics: what is theology, what is God, how do we study theology, etc. One of the first things we learned is also one of the things that’s stuck with me the most. Our

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
