Elizabeth Prater | Wednesday, March 24, 2021

On March 18, Ali Kershner, a sports performance coach at Stanford University, posted a photo comparing the weight rooms for the NCAA women’s and men’s basketball tournament. The post went viral — and for good reason. While the men’s teams had a room with power racks and Olympic bars and weights, the women’s teams were

From the Archives: Notre Dame’s first class of women

Evan McKenna, Adriana Perez and Madilynn O'Hara | Monday, September 28, 2020

In the fall of 1971, after years of plans for a Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s merger were ultimately scrapped, the University offered a highly-contested consolation — the admittance of women into the class of 1972.  This week’s edition of From the Archives explores the aftermath of the University’s coeducation decision: administrative adjustments, evolving traditions

From the Archives: 53 years of The Observer

Jim Moster, Maria Leontaras, Mary Steurer and Marirose Osborne | Monday, November 4, 2019

On Nov. 3, 1966, the very first issue of The Observer was published. In its debut edition, students and faculty expressed optimism for the newspaper’s future. We’re proud to see The Observer continue into its 53rd year. But we’d be remiss to celebrate the legacy of the paper without acknowledging the more unseemly elements of

Notre Dame needs to step up on intercampus stereotyping

Katie Hieatt and Annie Moran | Friday, September 27, 2019

Among the attempts to characterize Notre Dame culture that line the shelves of the Hammes Bookstore, there exists a cheeky character called “Things Notre Dame Students Like,” its contents compiled from a blog of the same name. Being lovers of relatable and self-deprecating humor (read: Twitter. We like Twitter.), we were eager to discover aspects

“We knew we were groundbreaking. We knew there were a lot of people against us. We knew we would succeed.” Anne Pillai, class of 1977, remembers the day she came home from high school and her mother informed her Notre Dame was accepting women. Now working as the associate program director for education and outreach

Hesburgh sprearheaded co-education initiative

Marisa Iati | Sunday, March 1, 2015

Long heralded as the driving force behind coeducation at Notre Dame, University President Emeritus Fr. Theodore “Ted” Hesburgh said he had simple reasons for opening the University to undergraduate women in 1972. “When God made the human race, he didn’t just make men; he made men and women,” Hesburgh told The Observer in February 2013.

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
