New cafe hopes to offer chill vibes, relaxed community

Ciara Hopkinson | Tuesday, September 17, 2019

While most students do not have the resources to start their own business until years after graduating from college, senior Amanda Estrada is putting her business savvy to the test early. Using the homey environment and additional space of her single, the Howard Hall resident is starting what she described as a “speakeasy cafe” in

Scene (near) South Bend: Spend a day in Goshen

Nora McGreevy and Charlie Kenney | Friday, October 5, 2018

Look, football is great and all, but those rare fall weekends without an exhausting, multi-hour sporting event are, in the opinion of these writers, some of the season’s greatest luxuries. Northern Indiana thrives in the fall and so do we. Temperatures creep down, breezes are crisper, leaves turn to crimsons, ambers and goldens — it’s the

Coffee is a necessary necessity

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, May 1, 2018

There are two types of students: those who don’t like coffee and those who would give their life if they had to, for a cup (or maybe two) of coffee. Without a doubt, I am the second one. For me, coffee is a necessity for college survival just as hot water is a necessity in

Students respond to potential Waddick’s renovation

Abigail Piper | Friday, March 2, 2018

In the past couple weeks, students have shown concern over the future of Waddick’s, the campus cafe inside O’Shaughnessy Hall. Rumors about possible renovations to the popular dining and coffee spot sparked major backlash among its frequenters. One such student, senior Susan Lefelhocz, began a petition “to keep the unique and beloved coffee shop Waddick’s

Starbucks’ 2017–2018 holiday cup

Colleen Zewe | Monday, November 6, 2017

Starbucks holiday cups arrived on Wednesday, Nov. 1, exactly 55 days before Christmas. As a Starbucks lover and holiday fanatic, I ignored the blatant commercialization of Christmas and extremely early timing to grab a holiday cup for myself as soon as possible. While I know Starbucks cups are certainly not the most important aspect of

“Understanding others” — the most valuable lesson barista Mariano Gomez of The Local Cup has learned in serving coffee to the community. A five-minute drive from Notre Dame, The Local Cup is a quaint, simple coffee shop attended by warm, welcoming people seeking to foster community in the Near Northwest Neighborhood (NNN). Entirely volunteer-run, the The Local

If you like coffee with your oxygen…

Letter to the Editor | Monday, April 24, 2017

Now don’t get me wrong — I know that coffee is life-giving. It has the incredible ability to pick you up from your crumpled, sleep-deprived state and transform you into an alert, ambitious pupil. It allows you to adopt godlike powers at 4am as you study straight through the night and ace that exam. With

Why colleges need coffee shops

Matthew Williams | Thursday, March 2, 2017

Going to college is an ideal in almost every human culture. As one of the major societal sifts that humans pass through on their way from adolescence to adulthood, college has many purposes. For some students, it provides the skills needed to take the next step in life. For others, it simply helps discern what

Scene in South Bend: Yellow Cat Cafe

Nora McGreevy | Thursday, February 16, 2017

In one classic scene from the NBC sitcom “Parks and Recreation,” Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman) are sitting in a booth at the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana’s beloved breakfast spot, J.J.’s Diner. It’s been an exhausting 24 hours. They’re both starving. The scene cuts in as a waitress sets down

Scene in South Bend: Cops & Doughnuts

Nora McGreevy | Friday, December 2, 2016

Fact: It is probably going to snow this Sunday. I understand that this message provokes a mixed bag of reactions. If you enjoy the cold weather, you might be enthusiastically seeking out winter-themed activities to pursue. If you, like me, despise the cold, the prospect of snow — not to mention a full week of

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
