Love and attention

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, April 5, 2022

I’m not very good at settling on a favorite anything, but when people ask me what my favorite movie is, I usually tell them 2017’s “Lady Bird.” It’s a pretty basic answer for a twentysomething white woman, but I tell anyone who will listen that my favorite artist is Taylor Swift, so it’s not like

From the Archives: Notre Dame admissions and issues of inclusion

Spencer Kelly, Uyen Le and Lilyann Gardner | Monday, April 4, 2022

As recently reported in The Observer, Notre Dame’s class of 2026 is incredibly inclusive. The incoming cohort contains students from all 50 states and 95 countries, while 47% went to public high schools, 41% are students of color, and 20 to 22% will be Pell Grant recipients. With an understanding that Notre Dame has not

‘Cheer’ is back and better than ever

Abigail Keaney | Tuesday, January 25, 2022

It might be difficult, but if you can manage to cast your mind all the way back to January 2020 — a distant time before the pandemic dominated our lives, you might remember a little Netflix show called “Cheer.” Following a Texas community college cheer team on their journey to the national championship in Daytona

Letting it slide – just a little

Eva Analitis | Tuesday, November 16, 2021

A favorite line of teachers in middle school was to tell us that high school instructors would never tolerate tardiness or turning work in late and, in high school, that college professors would never let so-and-so behavior slide. As a senior in college, it’s somewhat entertaining to look back on those warnings and evaluate their

How to fail at starting a band in college

Colleen Fischer | Thursday, May 6, 2021

(Or: A coming-of-age essay about giving up on your dreams) Step One: Want to start a band  All failed bands start the same way with someone wanting to start a band. If you talked to me in high school and asked me if I wanted to start a band, I would probably say that bands

Exam week scaries

Sydni Brooks | Tuesday, May 4, 2021

As we come to the end of another wacky semester, we are yet again bombarded with an immense amount of projects, essays, presentations and exams to demonstrate our time in our classes. Sunday scaries are bleeding into weekday scaries, caffeine addictions are spiking and the lack of sleep is terribly expressed on all of our

A literary labyrinth: Debut author A. Cavuto’s ‘The Dust That Danced’

Dessi Gomez | Friday, April 30, 2021

When Notre Dame senior Ashley Cavuto decided to write a book last March, she knew she wanted to include mythology, mystery and a maze. Before she became A. Cavuto, author of “The Dust That Danced” — a mystery novel which has entered the publication and printing process today through New Degree Press — she operated

Goodnight Lauren, what are you thankful for?

Diane Park | Friday, March 19, 2021

I am extremely culinarily challenged. So, unlike many of my peers who moved off campus for their last year of college, this was one of the driving factors that influenced my decision to stay on campus in Ryan Hall for the fourth consecutive year. There’s certainly pros and cons to living on campus; I love

Rethinking free college

Andrew Sveda | Monday, February 22, 2021

Should college tuition be free? For the past five years or so, Senator Bernie Sanders has been particularly vocal on this subject, going as far as to call free college a “human right.” But with the inauguration of Joe Biden, who supported a very generous free college program during his presidential campaign, what was once

How the $2 trillion COVID-19 stimulus bill leaves students out in the cold

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, April 2, 2020

The class of 2020 is about to break a record my own class of 2009 thought wouldn’t be broken any time soon: graduating into the worst job market ever. Today’s seniors might even have it worse — the coronavirus pandemic is much later in the year, causing companies to scramble their hiring plans, delaying start

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
