Defend democracy like a champion today

lettertotheeditor | Wednesday, February 1, 2023

It’s been two years since we collectively witnessed a failed insurrection and attack on the United States Capitol, and the threats to America’s democracy remain serious.  In its nationally-representative Health of Democracy Survey, taken weeks before the midterm elections, The Rooney Center for American Democracy uncovered a series of findings with grave implications for the

The machine gun method

Devin Humphreys | Monday, November 21, 2022

When I was in Algebra II my freshman year of high school, we were taught a couple of different ways to solve a quadratic equation. A couple have fallen by the wayside (as we law students do not regularly employ math more complicated than the Hand Formula), but I remember two distinct methods that had

I asked Notre Dame professors what amendments should be added to the Constitution

Blake Ziegler | Thursday, September 30, 2021

In its 233-year history, the U.S. Constitution has only been amended 27 times. There are two ways to amend the Constitution, but the biggest hurdle is that three-fourths of the states must ratify an amendment for it to be officially added to the Constitution. This makes the amendment process very difficult and explains why the

Danger ahead

Trevor Lwere | Monday, September 6, 2021

In January 2021, Facebook and Twitter shut down accounts on their platforms belonging to social media bloggers associated with the government and the ruling party in Uganda. This followed the indefinite suspension of President Trump’s accounts on both platforms in the wake of the siege on Capitol Hill. Recently, Facebook has been involved in a

Votes for women

Sara Schlecht | Wednesday, August 19, 2020

I have a confession to make. I spend a ridiculous amount of time thinking about my favorite parts of the Constitution. It’s definitely my most patriotic tendency — and one that I use to distract myself from disillusionment at the current state of American politics. As a student journalist, I absolutely love my First-Amendment rights.

What the founders learned from Cicero

Letter to the Editor | Friday, November 1, 2019

To refer to the American Founding as “fundamentally an Enlightenment project,” as has been written in this section, is to miss the vast wealth of classical wisdom that our Founders drew upon, and the inspiration it provided for our country’s birth. The belief that the Founding was monolithically inspired by John Locke’s classical liberalism is

Everyone deserves proportionality

BridgeND | Thursday, October 31, 2019

The Eighth Amendment, which prohibits “cruel and unusual punishment,” has always given constitutional scholars some difficulty regarding who is the proper actor to determine its meaning. The task of interpreting the Constitution traditionally falls to the courts, but for judges to apply their personal analysis of “cruel and unusual” seems arbitrary and more than a

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
