Letter to the Editor | Monday, December 3, 2018

“Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked, those who forsake your law” (Psalm 119:53). These words appeared in a daily Mass reading, shortly following the announcement of the University’s decision to include contraceptive coverage in its self-funded health insurance plans. This verse accurately described my sentiments in response to the new policy, and the

Response to “Pro-life is pro-woman”

Jackie O'Brien | Friday, September 28, 2018

I agree with the author of “Pro-life is pro-woman” and Notre Dame’s Right to Life Club that all persons have an intrinsic worth that is based neither on gender, circumstance, race, ethnicity or any other characterization. However, there are several places in the author’s argument where I do disagree with their arguments. First, I would

Pro-life is pro-woman

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, September 26, 2018

Hopefully most people at Notre Dame would agree that someone’s worth is not based on their circumstances, accomplishments or abilities, but simply on the fact that they are a human person. Regardless of our political or religious persuasions, this idea is generally a point of common understanding — and if this is not always the

Contraception is contra-Catholicism

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, March 22, 2018

In the Feb. 27 edition of The Observer, a Viewpoint by Zacharias Thundy praised the University administration’s decision to provide contraception to employees and graduate students as “admirable and justifiable.” Thundy asserts that it is “not true” when people claim that “Notre Dame’s move is not in compliance with Catholic faith and teachings,” arguing rather that

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
