Emma Duffy | Tuesday, February 22, 2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken over college campuses in the last two years. Notre Dame has instituted countless safety precautions in place to remedy this issue, and now, the impact of these measures is being studied to test the effectiveness of the University’s overall response.  The research was conducted by the Children’s Environmental Health Initiative

‘It’s starting to feel like it was before’: Pandemic looms over start of semester

Isa Sheikh | Friday, January 14, 2022

As students left campus in December, COVID-19 cases surged across the country. That trend has continued as the United States is averaging more than 700,000 new cases a day, far more than at any previous point in the pandemic. Though the Omicron variant has proven less fatal and less likely to lead to serious symptoms,

Expectation vs. reality

Claire Kirner | Monday, September 13, 2021

Will I do important research for a bio lab? Teach English to children in Uganda? Become an Imagineer for a Disney theme park?  Growing up in South Bend, and surrounded by ND students as a kid, it’s safe to say I had pretty high expectations for my freshman year at Notre Dame. These incredible people

According to the HERE dashboard, 10.42% of my undergrad classmates have tested positive for COVID-19. As of today, there have been 910 undergraduate cases reported at a university with an undergraduate population of 8,731. For reference, a quick Google search and a calculator shows that about 2.65% of Americans nationally have tested positive for coronavirus.

Observer Editorial: Don’t make us write obituaries.

Observer Editorial Board | Friday, August 21, 2020

When we learned the institutions within the tri-campus community intended to have students return for the fall semester, we experienced a variety of emotions — excitement to reunite with our friends, relief to return to the classroom following the difficulties of remote instruction and reluctance to acknowledge that the in-person semester we were promised could

Dear students, Our moment in the midst of this pandemic has arrived. It’s a moment that we never went looking for, but it’s our moment, nonetheless. Faced with a surge in COVID-positive cases during the early weeks of the fall semester, we are once again facing the possibility of returning home for remote instruction. How

“Is the flight still on?” Refresh page “Wait… Yes.” This is the interaction that played out on a loop every 10 minutes on the night of my flight back to the U.S. As a Notre Dame student who lives abroad, I have to fly over 6,000 miles back and forth every semester. On Aug. 4,

Let the students stay

Letter to the Editor | Friday, August 21, 2020

I read Stephanie McKay’s letter “Send the students home” in Wednesday’s Observer and agree in certain respects: 1. We cannot blame the students for doing what students do and wanting to be around each other — after all, they haven’t seen each other since March. Summer break felt like an eternity when it was only

One last ride

Mia Marroquin | Friday, August 21, 2020

Senior year. The last ride. One final hurrah.  It didn’t really hit me that I was entering my fourth and final year at Saint Mary’s until I stood on The Avenue with some of my closest friends, jumping up and down welcoming first-years to their new home.  I quickly realized that I had become that

New leadership offers change in the midst of uncertainty, examination of identity at Saint Mary’s

Maeve Filbin | Wednesday, August 12, 2020

Dr. Katie Conboy became the newest Saint Mary’s College President on June 1, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and a nationwide reckoning with racism and policing in America, and has been “drinking from the firehouse” ever since. After assuming office, Conboy successfully led the College in making several changes to the student experience,

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
