At the halfway point (a playlist)

Anna Falk | Wednesday, April 20, 2022

At nearly the halfway point of my college career, I’ve seen a lot — and I’ve heard a lot. Music is one of my many passions and for this article I wanted to share some of the moments and songs that have gotten me to where I am (mostly in order.)  “Nights In White Satin”

Patrick Witteman | Friday, March 12, 2021

The prolific French duo Daft Punk has officially split after 28 years of making, producing and releasing music. The group decided to break the news with an eight-minute clip from their 2006 movie, “Electroma.” The duo, composed of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (gold helmet) and Thomas Bangalter (silver helmet), pushed the limits of electronic music while giving

Patrick Witteman | Thursday, February 14, 2019

When Chaz Bear, better known as Toro y Moi, released his first album, “Causers of This,” in 2010, he became the designated torch bearer for the burgeoning chill-wave movement. Though that sound and aesthetic has started to fade from the mainstream, the Berkeley-based musician is still releasing some of the more inspired music of his

Justice crosses over to indie dance on ‘Woman’

Adrian Mark Lore | Tuesday, November 29, 2016

It has been about ten years since the French electro-house outfit Justice made its bombastic entrance into the vanguard of electronic dance music with the release of their debut LP, “Cross,” in 2007. That record was cathartic, invigorating, explosive, trashy and often just plain bad — yet in an excellent, arguably ground-breaking way. By pumping

Pop’s Ever-Present Past

Matthew Munhall | Monday, September 14, 2015

In 2010, critic Simon Reynolds wrote in The Guardian about the “1980s revival that lasted an entire decade.” Reynolds cites Daft Punk’s “Discovery” as the quintessential album of this revival, synthesizing post-disco, synthpop and electro in the process of reconstructing the 80s. The specter of the 80s during the the mid-aughts could be seen in

The Grammy Awards: The Great Compromise

John Darr | Monday, January 27, 2014

Since their establishment, major Grammy awards have gone to solely popular artists. For this reason, a shockwave went through the music community when the 2011Grammy for Album of the Year went to Arcade Fire, a Canadian indie-rock band. Although musical hipsters (myself included) nationwide rejoiced, most Americans responded with dismay and confusion. Twitter blew up

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
