Ashton White and Daniel Cage to sit out 2017

Observer Sports Staff | Thursday, July 20, 2017

Notre Dame’s 2017 defense suffered two blows in quick succession, as junior safety Ashton White chose to leave the team while senior defensive tackle Daniel Cage opted to take a medical redshirt year. White, a three-star recruit from Washington D.C., was one of five players arrested in Fulton County in August 2016 after police found

Kelly: ‘We have to focus on third down’

Marek Mazurek | Wednesday, November 9, 2016

For the second straight week, Notre Dame will go up against the triple option, as the Irish face Army on Saturday in San Antonio. Coming off a 28-27 loss to Navy this past weekend, Irish head coach Brian Kelly said his team’s mentality needed to go up against a run-first offense remains the same. “We understand the

Kelly discusses defending triple option, special teams struggles, concussions

Marek Mazurek | Wednesday, November 2, 2016

Despite Notre Dame’s first win in a month over Miami, Irish head coach Brian Kelly was not spending any time in his Tuesday press conference praising his team. Why not? Because Kelly was already worried about preparing for Navy. “Obviously, [Navy head coach] Ken Niumatalolo and what he’s done at Navy has been well documented,”

Irish defensive line readies for powerful Spartan rushing attack

Renee Griffin | Friday, September 16, 2016

If there’s a single word Irish players and coaches have repeatedly used to describe No. 12 Michigan State in the week leading up to Saturday’s game, it’s “physical.” That’s especially true of the Spartan offensive line, which will meet a Notre Dame defensive front that allowed 237 yards on the ground in the double-overtime loss

Kelly says Crawford out for the season, Hunter Jr. will be ready for Michigan State

Benjamin Padanilam | Tuesday, September 13, 2016

No. 18 Notre Dame bounced back in a big way Saturday with a 39-10 win over Nevada. But in the victory, the Irish suffered a tough loss when sophomore cornerback Shaun Crawford tore his Achilles tendon, effectively bringing an end to his season, Irish head coach Brian Kelly confirmed Sunday. “Shaun is a unique player

As spring winds down, defensive starters not set

Marek Mazurek | Thursday, April 14, 2016

Wednesday morning marked Notre Dame’s penultimate spring practice before the Blue-Gold game this Saturday. And while across-the-board open competition has shed light on some areas of the team, others — notably defensive leadership — remain up in the air. After practice Wednesday, Irish defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder discussed the impact of losing leaders from last year

Ezekiel Elliott, J.T. Barrett run wild against Notre Dame defense

Greg Hadley | Friday, January 1, 2016

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Every time it looked as though No. 8 Notre Dame’s offense had played the Irish back into the Fiesta Bowl on Friday, No. 7 Ohio State would respond with two seemingly unstoppable forces: junior running back Ezekiel Elliott and sophomore quarterback J.T. Barrett. The pair of Buckeyes sidestepped, stiff-armed and ran right

Senior cornerback KeiVarae Russell will miss Saturday’s trip to No. 11 Stanford, while senior running back C.J. Green: New assistants play crucial part in breakout seasons

Mary Green | Friday, November 20, 2015

We’ve talked enough about Notre Dame’s “breakout players” of 2015. You might say it’s impossible to talk too much about players like DeShone Kizer, who had a lock on the third-string quarterback slot just six months ago, C.J. Prosise, whose emergence in the backfield has made him one of Notre Dame’s most invaluable assets, or

Kelly discusses Shamrock Series, injury updates

Mary Green | Wednesday, November 18, 2015

This weekend marks No. 4 Notre Dame’s annual trip to a professional stadium for its yearly Shamrock Series game. This time, however, it won’t be played in an NFL venue, but a baseball one instead, with Saturday’s game against Boston College held at Fenway Park. The matchup isn’t Notre Dame’s first foray into historic baseball

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
